What is more important to you, truth or belief?

If there were some kind of irrefutable, factual evidence that came to light which went against your beliefs, would you still cling to your beliefs, or would you change them to fit the evidence?
Please, stick with the premise of the question rather than trying to avoid it by claiming you already have the truth or whatever. I'm looking for an honest discussion. If you can't or won't then just don't answer.
What is more important to you, that you learn the truth whatever it may be, even if it completely flies in the face of everything you've believed, or would you reject this new information in favor of your currently held beliefs?

If it was genuinely irrefutable, I would have to change my beliefs. I can choose to pay attention to something or not, or listen to someone or not, but I don't choose to believe or not believe something; I am simply convinced or otherwise. But of course, most evidence for most propositions is not irrefutable or 100%, obviously true. In most cases it is possible to say, "well, yes, but...". But my atheism, for instance, is not a case of saying, "I choose not to believe". I simply cannot do otherwise. And I think a theist does not choose to believe in god, either.
Having said that, I think truth is more important to me, because I want to seek the truth even if it distresses me. I think to avoid changing your beliefs you have to avoid seeking truth.

This is a very difficult question. My beliefs aren't just religion to me. I feel that I have a very personal relationship with my gods, so to prove they didn't exist would be like proving my family didn't exist.
I don't think I could take it, to be honest. While I might profess to no longer believe in what I now believe, I don't think I could actually totally accept and embrace the truth. That probably sounds silly to you, but I am being completely honest here.
Living life without my gods would be like suddenly finding out I was an orphan who imagined parents for myself and lived in a fantasy world forever. To leave the fantasy world would be to suffer separation from those whom I love, but staying it in would of course be madness.
Under those circumstances, I don't think I could every truly accept the new information. There would always be some part of me that thought "Mother is out there. She's waiting for me."

Truth to me is the ultimate!
Yes, of course I will change my beliefs is there were no basis whatsoever for holding them! I'm agnostic, by the way, still on the search for the Truth!

Thanks for starting this great discussion!

No, I'm not so blind as to believe in something that is PROVEN to be false. I think part of being spiritual is learning to grow and change, not sticking to something just because it gives you some sort of false security.

I belive in truth and not in belief.I would not reject the new information against my beliefs. If the truth is very hard to esscept then also i would not favour for my belief.I would go with the truth only, because it is going to help me in my further action.
