What is evolution?

Many people argue about evolution, but seem to have different ideas about what it really is. For instance, many claim that it has to do with random chance, when natural selection is far from random. So many who argue against it often argue against things that never were or are no longer part of accepted evolutionary knowledge.
So, what do you think evolution is? What do you think the claims of evolution are? Where did you get your information?
This is not a discussion about whether or not evolution is true, it is a discussion about what you think it is supposed to be. If you understand this, then I look forward to your answer.

Why do I have the feeling that myLot may produce some less-than-inspiring responses to this very good question?

It is due to your keen observation and the vague scent of guanaco feces that lingers at the edges of internet pages.
I'm actually not very surprised that there are so few responses. When truly pressed and not able to fall back on fallacies and incorrect assumptions, people fold like Kirsten Dunst after an appletini.
