I got my first fish bowl when my son's were little boys and
they wanted goldfish. I told them that this was a responsibility and they had to learn how to take care of them. We went through a lot of goldfish when they were young. Later on as they grew older we graduated to a fish tank. We starting out with the regular size one. We wanted to see how the boys are going to take care of cleaning the tank and taking care of the fishes. And they very well until they got to high school age and then lost
the excitment of the goldfish. Then the job became mines and my husband. Now my husband has the job alone. Now we have a huge tank and the joy we get out of still having it
is our grandkids. When they come and visit they love to go
to the tank and talk with the fishes. And I can tell you some of those goldfish had a long life span. I was very surprise to see how long they can live. We had some to grow
very big before they were called to "Fish Heaven".
We still have the tank at home and my husband and I will not part with our goldfish. The smiles are my grandkids
face are priceless. They light up my life. Isn't life so funny that it doesn't have to take much to make a child happy or put a smile on there little faces.

Goldfish are great! I bought one just for fun and wasn't expecting it to live long- it was only a ten center feeder fish...but I have it 3 and a half years later still! It's so easy to take care of (if you know what you are doing) yet it gives so much back! I love how kids are so easily amused too, it's wonderful. Being around them are nice reminders to adults, about being thankful for the many small things we overlook :)

Goldfish are so cool!!! Did you know that there is a study
that says "golfish" are good therapy? They recommend using
aquariums and fish bowls with goldfish and other fish species treating patients with certain disease. I know that the study shows that it helps calm patients that suffer with anixety and other medical disorders. I know that they are in Dr's offices ususally in the pediatric wing. It helps kids feel calm and happy about visiting the Dr. I know they do well in nursing homes to help the elderly aging patients calm down.

We had a thirty gallon tank of fish for a while and enjoyed them very much. As you say, there is more work to keeping fish than most people realize. I loved watching the clown loaches, the lovely little neons, and the kissing gouramis. I understand that fish are considered very helpful in calming nervous people, and useful in that way for lowering blood pressure.
