Messy cupboards

Okay this is a touchy area in my household. There is just myself & my wife and elderly father who doesnt get around the house much even. My wife works all day & I stay home as a caregiver to dad. Now I do a lot of the house work etc. Now the problem I have is that I like my cupboards neatly arranged. My wife & boths kids when they vivit have a great tendancy to move stuff anywhere & everywhere. After we grocery shop I find the spices in with the canned goods. I find a lot of things scattered all over. Seeing as I'm the one at home most I like knowing where everything is and not searching for items. I'd like to hear anyone elses stories along this line. How do you keep up with neatness in the kitchen? How do you go about storage etc? Who mainly puts things away? Who is the one that uses the items the most? What do you do when a mess appears due to someone else? I'm looking forward to some hopefull interesting yet funny responses. Thanks in advance for responses. I try to read them all when I have time. Happy postings from Grandpa Bob.

My husband works fulltime, and I stay home and care for 3 children. I am reasonably organised, but not a perfectionist. About 2 months ago my husband complained about the cupboard where I keep saucepans, frying pans, etc. He tried to reorganise it, which was a nuisance, as I do 90% of the cooking. When I was in hospital recently, my husband did the cooking for the kids, and myself when I came out. After one week I was ready for cooking again. The saucepan cupboard was a mess. For one week or so I was always searching for the right lids to match saucepans. Even now, there is still one lid missing. I think if I am doing the cooking, I should be able to arrange the cupboards how I want.

The wife, daughter & I went to the grocery store today. She put things away. She left for work & 1 hour later I wanted to cook dinner for dad & I. Guess what? Sure enough some of the things I needed we had just got weren't where I usually put them HAHAHAHA. Happy postings from Grandpa Bob

ceciliamilgate, Liked the idea of date checking etgc. My kids take the foods tioo fast to get old. And if I may add a little suggestion.it's better for you & more benificial to respond to a post instead of add a coment. Unless the comment is in relation to that said response. You earn more possible points & rating status etc for responses to a topic I think. Anyhow thanks for the comment. Happy postings from Grandpa Bob

I try to organised all my stuff, in the pantry.everytime my husband want's something I have to get it for him he said I plant them. I also from time to time check the labels if they are outdated.I have so many of one kind so I keep my other cooking pot and pans out of my sight. It's really hard to be organize if you have little space.

one thing that I've found helps with my roommates is labeling where things go. I just take a strip of masking tape and write on it with a permanent marker. I have a very small kitchen with a hanging spicerack so i don't have to worry about that, but it drives me crazy to have somone stick the honey right next to the onions or something like that. so i designate the spaces and clearly label.

Hi Grandpa Bob- I am not a neat freak or obesessive compulsive, however my cabinets do have a certain order to them. I like the can goods together preferably veggies together, soups together, boxed goods, spices, you get the idea, and the dishes are the same, I have a stack of plates with the largest on the bottom to the smallest on top, same with bowls, (and my holiday dishes never get put with the everyday dishes)it drives me nuts when my husband or 18 year old son put things away, in the "wrong" place. I gave up saying anything years ago, it just made them stop helping as much. So now if I open the cabinets and things are in the wrong place, I quietly move them trying not to get caught (because they may see me and stop helping again). Sometimes after a trip to the grocery store, I'll actually go through and straighten out the cabinets, if anyone asks I just tell them I'm trying to make more room.

Grandpa Bob, I am very neat and organized and everything has it's place and it doesn't mean you can move it around. I share my apartment with a good friend and he moved things around so much that it got me so confused and dizzy I couldn't find anything. Hmmmmm what to do? So the only way to fix the problem was to go in his closet and neatly rearrange all his stuff. Hahahaha I never find a thing out of place any more - wonder why???

I'm like you too. I like to know where things are around in the house especially since I'm a stay at home mom and spend most of my time here. And I like things neat. I'm the one doing most of the storing, organising, etc so I have a system for everything. It drives me nuts too when my husband uses stuff and don't put them back in the same spot. I am SO tempted now to go get a label maker and label everything and make sure everything goes back to it's "rightful" location. Grrr!! Do I sound like a control freak? Maybe I am a tad. hahaha!

Hi Grandpa Bob, you have too much time on your hands, chill out and play on mylot instead, does it matter if things are not in the right place - really? I am the only person who knows where anyting is in my kitchen, Shrek canfind the fridge and the sweets, the kids can find the sweets and the bin, lol. We extended our kitchen a couple ofyears ago and I still have stuff pushed in everywhere - don't think it'll ever be big enough, lol.

I go through this with my BF. Only we both usually put the groceries in the same place that isn't an issue in our home. What is though is he likes to rearrange the furniture and medicine cabinets and also our one cupboard in the kitchen that we keep stuff that we use daily like tape scissors stamps etc. So needless to say this can be quite annoying for when I go to find something that has been in the same cupboard for a while I find it to be moved to another room in the house totally! One cupboard that we can never seem to keep organized is ou pots and pans cupboard!
