Even though spring is around the corner, we still have many nights left of the cold, cold weather. What are some of your favorite winter time dinners that you serve? Recipes that are good hearty or warm you up quickly?

Sounds good and simple enough-but a packet base mix of what? Or from what?

with casseroles i usually fry up some onion and garlic, then brown the meat, add some diced potato, carrots, peas, corn and whatever else i have on hand, throw in some dry pasta shells, add a packet base mix and then fill with a can of tin tomatoes, water, salt, pepper and gravy. Stir well, cover and simmer for 1.5 hours, stirring occasionally..
we love this recipe..

Tonight its Swiss Steak in the Crock Pot with mashed potatoes and corn. Yep very midwestern. Total recipe needs: 1 1/2 to 2 lb. piece of round steak tenderized, 28-32 ounces of tomato sauce, 1 cup flour, Coarse ground black pepper to taste, 1/4-1/3 cup dehydrated onion flakes or fresh equalivant, 1/2 to 1 cup brown sugar. (If using no salt added tomato sauce figure about 1/2 cup) Tonight I started with an almost 2lb piece of round steak tenderized and cut into serving portions. Dredge in flour seasoned with coarse ground pepper. Layer in crock pot as follows 8 oz no salt added tomato sauce. The first 2 pieces of meat. Top with about 8 oz of tomato sauce a little bit of the dredging flour, dehydrated onion flakes and a bit of brown sugar. Repeat layering ending with sauce, onion, and brown sugar. Cook on High for about 4 hours Low 6-8 hours.

I haven't had swiss steak in years and I bet it is palin delcious (and the most tender it can be) out of a crock pot. Thank you for sharing... I will be trying this soon!

Nothing like a hearty soup to warm you up in the winter. I make up a can of Cream of Mushroom soup and enjoy that.
But if you want a good recipe, here´s a hearty one:
Carmen´s Caper
1 package spagetti, cooked to al dente
1 small can tomato paste,
1 cup water or milk
1 can mushroom soup
1/2 lb. hamburger meat
1 onion, chopped
1 c. grated cheddar cheese
Saute onion and meat in a frying pan until the meat is cooked through. Mix tomato paste, water and soup togetherIn a casserole dish, layer first 1/2 the spagetti, top with half the meat mixture. Pour half the soup over this and repeat the same layering technique. Top with the grated cheese and pop in the oven for about 30 minutes at 350º.

Yum-I have a recipe that is very similar in casserole form, and I call it Cheeseburger casserole. Does yours resemble a cheeseburger in flavor?
