Do you ever feel guilty about leaving your cat alone?

Last week, my husband left the country for a few months. Before he left, he was my cat's favorite playtoy. Since he left, she has been kind of clingy...she follows me from room to room and has become a lap cat at least an hour every day (She used to hate sitting on your lap).
I try to give her at least an hour of active running, jumping and chase play time every day to make up for the fact that he's gone, but I still feel guilty every time I have to leave the house or sit down to work. It's especially bad when I leave for a couple hours, because then when I get home, she will not do anything except sit on my lap for at least an hour.
I know she's just lonely and missing him, but should I feel guilty about having to still do my job and other things in my life?

I feel guilty too..but you have to go to work and live your life. Your kitty will entertain herself until you come home. I think all good pet parents have some seperation anxiety.. You shouldn't feel guilty about leaving her to work - your work pays for her food.

I suppose that's true...if I don't work, there's no fishy-fish for her. But I know that the first day after my husband was gone I wouldn't have made it through without her and I know he's coming back in a few months. There's no real way to explain that to a car, no matter how smart she is.

Our cat is just the opposite. If we leave for more than an hour or two at a time, she gives us the cold shoulder after we return, refusing to look at us or come near us.
She isn't a real cuddly cat, but she likes to be in whatever room we are in.
Just go about your normal activities. Your cat will adjust.
They may act sullen or hurt for a while, but they come around quickly.

Rain used to be that way...but I swear she's still wondering where my hubby went. It was like one minute he was here and then poof, he's gone...I can't really explain to her that he'll be back in a few months.

I do feel bad leaving our cats home alone sometimes. I feel like if they are home all day by themselves that they get lonely (I know that is silly since they have each other). I can't imagine how guilty I owuld feel if we just had one cat!

I'd like to get her a playmate, but we want to try her with another cat....like a play date...first because she was so abused (by other cats) when she was stray. When we first got her, she had scars and an open wound from being in fights with other cats. So, I don't want to go get antoehr kitten and have her hate it.

I always feel guilty about leaving my cats alone, even though I'm sure that they sleep most of the time. And last year, I felt really guilty about leaving my Tabitha alone so frequently. My dad had lung cancer and my sister needed someone to care for him while she was at work. So I wound up spending days at her house and worrying about my little baby girl back at home.

And the reason you had to leave your baby alone was so important! Still, it's too bad you couldn't be with her, because she would have been comforting for you! Right after my husband left, Rain was so snuggly and it made me feel less lonely.

I would say not to feel guilty because you can't be home all the time, but i now if you're anything like me,you'll keep on feeling guilty.I keep telling myslef I can't stay at home all the time because I have things to do but when I leave him,he meows so pitifully and will jump up on the window sill and wait for me to come home. When I come home,he jumps on me and starts purring and rubbing his head up against me

She definitely misses me and lets me know. When I come in the door, she's there to greet me and she hovers at my feet until I sit down. Then, I'm getting a lapful of kitty for awhile :)

Thankfully, she's not destructive...well, except to feathery toys. Those she destroys while trying to eat them, but she'll do that if I'm here or not. I leave the curtains open and the television on for her...maybe that will help her separation anxiety :)

I feel bad sometimes when I leave, but somebody's gotta bring home the bacon. I can't stop having a life, just because my cat might get lonely.

Hi there, I feel so sorry for your family (you, your husband and your cat). I know how do you feel because I used to feel guilty when leaving my Danish. Well, we have such works that could not be lack at. I think you should try to talk to her. Telling her you are not in purpose to leave her alone. I used to do it on Danish. I had to leave him with my mother when I was going back to campus. It is really sad because he used to find me in my room and giving the sad voice. My mother saw that all. When i was home I will talk to him nicely and console him..

Sometimes I do feel guilty leaving my cats alone at home. But my cats can be left alone because they can look for their own foods around the house and sometimes in the neighborhood. They used to be bred at home a year ago but I no longer have time for they I just left food in their plate enough for the whole day consumption.

I personally don't feel guilty leaving my cat alone.Of course I have more than one & they seem to keep eachother occupied, by playing together & getting into mischief together. Maybe you could get it a playmate...two cats aren't too much trouble.

That's why I have two cats- so they keep each other entertained. Whenever I go away though they break something as a way of getting back at me for the lack of attention. That is only when I'm gone for at least a night though- otherwise they're pretty good if I'm just at work or shopping or something of the sort.

Yeah, I thought about the idea of getting her a playmate, but she's pretty territorial. Before we got her, she was a stray and the other cats beat her up pretty bad, so I'm not sure how much she likes other cats at this point.

No, you should not feel guilty. There are things that you have to do. She is missing your husband and will probably start to adjust just in time for him to get back. You are giving her the extra attention she is looking for - that is a good thing. Just let her be herself, and don't feel guilty. You know that he will be back soon. And your cat will be happy to see him when he gets back.

It was so adorable! He called today while I was gone and when I replayed the message on the answering machine, she jumped up and started pawing at the machine, trying to find him.

I don't feel guilty about leaving for them to up to a weekend but beyond that I do. I miss them and I think they miss us. They hang around outside during the day so are fairly self sufficient to begin with, but they do like their comforts of coming in in the evening and being a part of family life.

I dont feel bad about leaving Junior because he's never alone..I have 3 dogs to keep him company, and he's outside most of the time anyway running around not worrying about me LOL but I work at home so I dont leave him that often. If I left him alone all day, every day then I probably would feel bad. I did feel really guilty in May because we went on vacation and my brother stayed here with them for the week we were gone..and Junior stopped eating while we were gone. He lost all kinds of weight and his fur started to fall out. poor baby looked terrible. I felt soooo guilty. Then I was mad at my brother because he didnt mention to me he wasn't eating. I would have told him to feed him some tuna or cook him a steak or something..anything to get him to eat. LOL Don't feel guilty about leaving him..just keep giving him lots of love when you come home and I'm sure he'll be fine. :O))

You are sweet and normal to feel that way. Some people do not feel that way to their pets. I would suggest another cat. I did that, and my first is so much more happier. I had to get a kitty, so he would not fight. They needed separate rooms for a while until they got used to eachother. But when I leave now, I don't feel as bad. But, they still miss me, and cry at the door when I am coming in.

I feel guilty every time I leave my cat alone for a while. He gives me a sad look when I leave. My friend put it to me this way. "You're his mom...think about how you felt when your parents were gone for a while. You think 'Yipee party!!!!' So he doesn't care..."
It made me feel a little better. BUt I know he does care when it's been all day. He gives me non stop attention!

I too often feel guilty about leaving my cat and dog home alone! I'm such a pushover, because I make myself feel better by giving them each treats every time I leave, and now they get all excited when I'm getting my shoes and jacket on, because they know they're getting treats!
You can't avoid having to do other things in your life. You have to keep a roof over your kitty's head, right? I have heard some people say to leave the TV on when you're gone because it gives the cat something to listen to. (Seriously... a veterenarian told me this!) Also they make certain toys where you can put a treat inside and the cat has to work to get it out... that might keep her busy while you're gone so she doesn't realize you were gone long!
Good luck!
