Giving a tip to a waiter or waitress?

giving a tip to a waiter/waitress - When in a restaurant, do you usually give a tip to the waiter or waitress who served you? Me, I don't. But I want to hear from people who usually do that. I wanna know why too. :)

When there's a change to your bill in a restaurant, do you keep the change or just leave it there as a tip to the waiter or waitress that served you?Me? Usually, I don't really practice giving a tip. It's not that I'm too thrifty. I'm just not used to it and I feel awkward if I do that. I remember when my Auntie and I went out to dinner in a prestigious restaurant in our place, our bill was 225 pesos. She gave out 300 pesos so there was a change of 75 pesos. I was about to get the change for her but she said, no, just leave it there as a tip. For me, 75 pesos is such a an amount already. But why do customers give a tip? As I've said, I don't pracitice it. Do you also give a tip to waiters or waitresses who served you?:)

In the U.S. there is no service charge. I forgot about that, though. When we go to Canada there is, and then we don't tip on top of that.

In the Philippines, some restaurants have service charges but some don't. Of course, if they already include a service charge, of course, no need to tip. But how about those restaurants that don't have? Do still tip?

Most certainly! Although I no longer work there was a time that I supported my children on not one but two waitress jobs at the same time. Wait staff don't get paid minimum wage. They get paid much less because they are "supposed" to make up the rest in their tips. If they are lucky they do, if they get a day full of non-tippers they don't. If I get a waitress or waiter who is very rude that is the only time I will not tip. If I get one that makes mistakes and can joke about it, or one that takes a long time to wait on my but I can see is very busy and not just standing around, I know that they are doing their job to the best they can. I worked as an underground coal miner and as a waitress and I can promise you - the waitress job was much harder and way more stressful on a day to day basis ~Donna

Yes, I leave tips. Waitresses and waiters do not usually make much money so I leave a tip if the service is good. I have worked as a waitress and I know that the job is not as easy as it looks!

it would depend. i look at the tab first, if there's a service charge i don't give tips. if the food is very high priced and the quality of the food doesn't compensate for the price, i don't give tips too. but if the service is superb and the waiter or waitress is extra nice than the usual, i give tips. this would be very seldom.
