I was having a great day until I opened the electric bill. I live alone, and my bill last month was 70 dollars. This month my bill is...................
$$181.14
How you may ask? I DONT KNOW!! My apartment is always cold and is usually dark. The only thing I use on a regular basis is my computer.
I'm stressed now.. It really can't be right. Grrr

invest on an lcd monitor to save some electricity. a crt monitor, those big ones, consumes too much electricity compared to an lcd monitor. that's what i want to buy too, i just don't have the budget yet. that's also the reason why i turn off my crt monitor to save electrical energy.

Thanks for the tip. I have a brand new flat screen LCD monitor. I keep it off when it's not being used.

I would consider that great bill!! Ours has been over $450 at times....crazy I know but we had to pay it. We don't use alot of electricity either.

How many people live in your house? One person lives in my one bedroom apartment. I'm never home and my appliances are never on. I would have to dispute your "thats a great bill" claim.

The meter is not read every month, they give you an estimated bill periodically which jacks up your electric bill price and supposedly then when they read the meter the next time your bill is much lower.
If you use electric for heat, or cooking, this jacks up the bill as well.
For us the gas bill goes up in winter, the electric in summer, depending heat or air conditioner use.
It is possible it could also be an error, or check he details if they printed the bill before getting last months payment, then the bill is only 50 dollars higher than last month not 110.

No.. I paid last month. It's a totally new bill. The meter reads what they say it does.. I'm just finding the number to be outrageous being that I live alone. I'm never home and my heat has set to 60 or below all winter long.

Oh my gosh. Have you called? Didnt they get the billing screwed up before or something like that? And was that ever figured out? Ours jumped in November and has been high ever since.. and we can't figure out why except we added a new addition on.. even that I wouldnt think would make it jump.

You may want to call your electric company and see if they can send someone out to look at your place. Not wanting to scare or say bad things, but my parents house burned down a few weeks ago, due to an electrical problem. They were at the house a few days later when the electric company came to shut off all power to the house. The lady that read their meter told them that she could have told them that they had a problem because their bill was going to be real high. It was too, almost twice as what she was used to paying. My parents told her that was the reason the house burned, electrical, a wire had frayed. That may be an option you will want to look at. Also, ask about getting put on a budget with your electric bill. If you live in an apartment, they may just be averaging out the bill for everyone in the apartment (if one person is using a lot, it effects others).

You might want to check and see if they gave you the credit for paying last months bill. Do you have electric heat? I do, and it makes my bills very high. If you have to, call your electric company to find out why. They may have also misread your meter!!! I would check into it.

Did you use any sort of heater (electric/gas) by any chance? Did you forgot to turn off any device? Do you use computer a lot? You better call your electricity provider and ask if their employee have mistakenly reading your electricity meter. Hope that helps.

If you call your electrical company the will tell you that rates have gone up. We have a day care center in town here utilities use to be 725 a month now over 2,000 now due to increase of utility company..
