Ok. I need help in planning a trip. We are going to Florida over Easter break to visit my husband's grandparent's. Unfortunately, we are driving down from New York State. We have an 8 year old and a 6 month old. I am not worried about the 8 year old sitting still for that long. Traveling with the baby will be tough though. We plan on leaving at around 8pm or so and driving through the night to get most of the driving done. That way the kids can stay on their sleep schedule (especially the baby - I would hate to mess up her schedule!! ) So if anyone has any hints about traveling with a baby, please let me know!!! Or any hints on packing - we will be down there about a week so I think it will be difficult to pack. Anything you can offer will be greatly appreciated.

I got a mirror at walmart that attaches to the back of the seat, there's a remote that you can hook to your visor, when you push a button on it, the mirror lights up and plays songs. I think it might be made by Fischer Price. That helped a lot. Try to feed the baby right before you leave and whenever you pull over, it sucks when you are stuck on a freeway and the baby is hungry. Pack extra clothing inside the car, so if there's a leaky diaper or spit up you don't have to dig around your luggage for a fresh set. Good luck!

Those mirrors are excellent.
I've had one of those before and it provided hours of amusement, and actually helped send my son to sleep - along with the movement of the car.
I'm pretty certain it's made by Fisher Price too.

You're wise to do most of the travelling at night. We always did that when my family was young. We had a sedan car and rigged up a way to fill in the back from the front of the back seat to the back of the front seats and then could make a bed for them to be comfortable. (This was before vans with dropdown seats).
Another must is to have wet wipes, or even a few facecloths along, either wet in a plastic container or have some water along.
Pack the necessities for the trip in a bag that's easily accessible.
And, as for the packing for a baby for a week, don't you have to take just about the whole house? lol
I would say take enough clothes for both of them for about three days, as I'm sure you'll have laundry facilities with relatives. Enjoy you holiday!

We never really did anything special. My kids have been taking long car trips since they were born. My oldest traveled from Missouri to Chicago at 3 weeks old (it took us about 8 1/2 hours). My son went from Chicago back to Missouri at 1 month and my middle daughter took her first trip from Chicago to Missouri at 1 week old. My youngest took her first ride at 2 1/2 months from Pittsburgh to Chicago (took us about 9-10 hours).
We just stop whenever the baby gets fussy and she gets fed and changed and the rest of us get to stretch. We also stop for an hour to eat (well now with 4 kids it takes more like an 1 1/2-2 hours) and if it is a long ride we might stop later at a Wal-mart just to walk around. It makes the trip take longer but it really helps get all the ants out of the kids pants, lol. Mostly they just sleep. It doesn't matter if we leave right when they get up after sleeping 12 hours--my middle two kids will fall asleep within a half hour.

6 months is still a decent age for long trips. They're used to being in one place, and don't have the need to get up and run around. You'll need to make stops for the 8 yr old, so make sure to take baby out of the car seat and play during that time. And try to keep baby on schedule with food and sleep. It should be fine.

its deffinatly a good idea to leave at night. durring the day i would give room in your plans to stop like ever 2-3 hours. durring lunch like eat outside maybe, if its nice out. just so the kids can get out energy ect. maybe do the same for dinner!

I guess another thing to keep an eye on is the weather as it will be warmer so pack for the cooler conditions when you leave but layer the clothing so you can peel off as it gets warmer. Also dont load the car with the whole weeks worth of diapers and wipes etc as they can be purchased at your destination easily enough, ( and you will only have to buy more later on anyhow) As a seasoned packer / traveller I suggest rolling your clothing rather than folding as this will also take up less room in your luggage. Try to take a stroller rather than a big pram and plenty of smaller favorite toys rather than big chunky ones. Also tetra packs of formula are great to save time on making up powder and water. You can never feed them quick enough once they have decided they are hungry!!!And my last tip is lots of hugs and kisses and cuddles. Enjoy your trip.

The best advice i can give you is to try and get as much driving in while the baby is asleep. I've been on long trips with babies and I have found that the only peace you get is when they're asleep
