Etiquette: Modern Western etiquette instructs people to greet friends and acquaintances with warmth and respect, refrain from insults and prying curiosity, offer hospitality equally and generously to guests, wear clothing suited to the occasion, contribute to conversations without dominating them, offer assistance to those in need, eat neatly and quietly, avoid disturbing others with unnecessary noise, follow the established rules of an organization upon becoming a member, arrive promptly when expected, comfort the bereaved, and respond to invitations promptly.
Chivalry: Thou shalt respect all weaknesses, and shalt constitute thyself the defender of them. Thou shalt love the country in which thou wast born. Thou shalt not recoil before thine enemy. Thou shalt never lie, and shall remain faithful to thy pledged word. Thou shalt be generous, and give largess to everyone. Thou shalt be everywhere and always the champion of the Right and the Good against Injustice and Evil.
Manners: Saying thank you, please, excuse me, Yes, madam (ma'm); No, sir or vice versa, standing up when elders enter the room, helping sit down ladies and the elderly, giving your seat to the former, not speaking over conversations, no excessively loud talking, overendulging in drink or food, making inappropriate noises or jokes, and so forth.

I live in a modern city like Milan but so poor of social education. Here the people don't know the words "excuse me thanks or sorry"...if you are in a public space such as in metro or in train and they hustle you ,they never turn back their head to say excuse, the people here is very ill-mannered.I work here from 2 years and the morning when I rise by elevator and I always meet the same people no one says me goodmorning!!!Only the immigrate people or the foreigns are gentle and educate.....

Yeah, things pre-pitiful society were pretty good. Seriously, when I first met real suburbanites, I thought I'd met some sort of new animal. I had some trouble realizing that the real problem was that they were jerks.
What gets on my nerves is that the standard gets lower as new generations are brought up by those who are barely able to hold a conversation. I can hardly wait to see what new wonders issue forth.
Good book on the subject (Penguin Classics) Baldesar Castiglione, "Etiquette For A Renaissance Gentleman".
