Do you take VITAMINS?

A new study, done in Norway was released recently, that states that vitamins actually shorten the human lifespan. They warn that taking vitamins and supplements, especially Vitamin A, and E,and Beta Cerocine, have shown through numerous tests to reduce lifespans by by 16% 4%, 7%, respectively . They say that the reason people have shortened lifespans is because taking vitamins, unnaturally, leads to a disorder in the natural immune system, because their body did not go about getting these vitamins through natural, healthy, food, and so they are more likely to live less.
I have not taken vitamins in a long time. Whenever, I feel that I have not had enough vitamins in my regular food, in a while, then I might take one. However, the reason I had stopped (other than having no time), is that I had heard long ago that there was still uncertainty about what effects vitamins might have on us, because they were still fairly new, and research was still in the early stages.

I do not take vitamins tablets on regular basis. Only during sickness which is very rare take few pills. Vitamins requirement can be completed from various types of food. But the people prefer shortcut method, so problem arises.

My husband is the same way, he will take vitamins when he is feeling sick, but, he and I agree that when people do take shortcuts, there will be problems that arise.

I believe that most of our illness comes from the mind. The way we think. If we are always worried about our health we attract bad health into our lives, but if we think positive, like I am healthy and feel great then we attract healthy and feeling great. If you have not seen the movie "The Secret" I would suggest watching it. It makes alot of sence to me.

I'm taking supplement instead, protection for the liver and heart, with the condition of our environment, with this pollution.. we need to be more conscious about our health.
We're aging too fast and these hazards added to the process, dang, I missed the old days where air is still clean, rivers are still fresh.

I believe that specific viatmins, are better than multivitamins, and, if they are recommended by our doctors, than that is good. However, there are some, that we can actually overdose on, so it is good to find out what our bodies neeed (as I believe you have done), before we just take anything. I know that when women are pregnant, doctors have them take folic acid, however, I have heard, that they recommend it for women all the time...I do not know if that is necessarily appropriate, but, these things can get so confusing...I do miss the clean days (which would be hundreds or years before my time, lol).

I do take vitamins as this was interesting to hear since the news reports here only have good things to say about taking vitamins. I have not heard of any reports stating vitamins would harm you and shorten your lifespan. I take Vitamin B-12 as well as Centrum Multivitamin and Citracal. I will have to talk to my doctor and see what she has to say. Thank you for sharing this information.

As in all things we should strive for balance. Vitamins and minerals are indeed among those things that can be of help to us when our diet or physical condition calls for it. I heard that anything you take you only absorb about 80 per cent of it anyway. Seems like a waste of money on some level.
I have often charged that any scientist can can do a study to back up their belief. So I wonder often when these studies come out what their motivation is.

That is another reason why I stopped also, I just could not take vitamins regularly, and I did not have a regular meal plan either, so I never took them, because I missed too many meals, and ate at different times. I think, that it is better for us to eat healthy, and then if there are things that we need to take, because we are low in them, then that is fine, but I do not want to take multivitamins either.

I really don't take too many vitamins. I don't think they're really good for you. Back in the days people didn't even know vitamins existed, and they lived very long. I think it depends on what you need them for. Most of the vitamins have gelatin in them, so I can't have them for religious reasons as well. But this is a really important question, and thank you for bringing it up.

vitamins are essential to our body, just in case you do not eat the right food, at least you got vitamins to replace it..

I have always wondered if this was another health craze hoax or if vitimins really can make a difference. I was taking them over the last several years, but not recently.
I don't know if this study is accurate or what all the dynamics are, but I would bet that for some people, they actually lived longer by taking vitimins. The results say that lifespans were reduced and that was probably for the majority.
This is another of those never ending questions that has individual answers. How can anyone know for sure how much vitamins and minerals they are getting from eating or taking supplements? I think it depends on how much is actually absorbed into the body. And how can you measure that for every individual?
Finally, I am beginning to believe, without a doubt, that health is a matter of how we think. Healthy thinking will result in healthy living. I believe that health comes from a state of mind as much as from anything else. As long as we do little to detract from being in a healthy state, like smoking, over-eating or drinking, etc, we can live healthier lives. I also believe the mind has the power to cure many diseases and sicknesses.

I've tried to take vitamins a lot of different time over the past 10 years or so. I could never keep up with taking them though because of bad stomach upset and other side effects related to my GI tract. I've always had people telling me that I should keep trying to find one that works for me because it's important to take some sort of vitamin everyday. I had no idea of the negative effects they could have on a person. Now I don't feel so bad about not taking them all of this time.

I have never heard that being said. The only harm I have heard about on the news is the harm that will happen if people take too many or mix them with medicine .As for studies,I don't listen to them because they are always contradicting themselves as another responder to this discussion stated.

i think if we have a regul alimentation like "mediterranean diet" we shold haven't particular problems... baut in some periods (problems with health) of our life we must take a particular integrator for minerals and vitamins

I take a multi, E, and C separately. I try to eat organic fruits and veggies, if possible. Researches change all the time. All we can do is our best, and try to stay well. The air is polluted. The foods, meats, chickens have antibiotics, and so forth.

Wow, I did not know that. I thought taking vitamins were good for us. I don't take any vitamins anyway.. I only get vitamins from food and drinks. I used to take children's vitamins growing up. My mom gives my younger brothers and sister Flinstones children's vitamins now.. Do you think it's ok with children? I'm glad I never bothered to take vitamins.. Thanks for posting this as a discussion.

Sigh. Studies like these are always so depressing. You think you are doing something good for your body, then some researcher comes along and tells you you're only killing yourself faster...lol. I don't know, I take a multivitamin about 3 times a week, just in case I'm not getting enough in my diet (which could certainly be healthier). I will need to hear more studies of this kind before I'm convinced vitamin are a bad thing.

Exactly. I feel the same way...sometimes, we just don't know who is really telling us the truth, and who know what they are talking about...It is good to be aware though.

I have heard that taking supplement pills regularly is bot good for you because of the chalky residues left in your blood stream. These redidues apparently over time can clog your arteries causing heart problems. But another study shows that taking a liquid supplement does not carry the same chalky residue, therefore a liquid vitamin supplement is in fact better for you, not to mention the 98% absorption rate compared to a Pill at 5-10% absorbtion. So if you feel you need to take a vitamin supplement I would suggest a liquid form. I know of one natural liquid multivitamin that I like and take regularly with no bad results. http://ralphsmallpiece.com/valn.htm
