My friends and I were discussing something similar to this yesterday. Personally, I am very anti-war. I do not think that violence is the answer to our problems. I said that if drafting was brought back in, I would be registering as a conscientious objector.
I don't think that being in the army necessarily provides discipline for a younger generation. Being in the army, especially considering the current world situation, is not just about learning discipline. People die. Is it really worth a life to learn discipline?

Suppose you have a point looking at todays WAR climate and how many battles we are engaged in around the world
I have my own views about war along with which countries we are currently resident in helping out, but thats probably another discussion.
Not all drafted persons go to war as there are many jobs within the armed forces that need to be done. Unfortunately, drafted or voluntary this is part of certain military job profiles

Tony Blair's instated a 'no get out clause', huh? Nice. I think it's fair to say that I don't put a whole lot of faith in the current British government, for reasons that would take far too long to explain.
As for 'doing what's right and proper'... There are so many different ways to look at that. I don't believe that it is right and proper to kill people. Nor do I believe that I would fight for something I didn't believe it. If you don't hold true to your morals and principles, then what do you have? If more thought was put into WHY we are having issues leading to war, then maybe they could be prevented.
Germany. Ha, there's a contentious subject. I can't comment on the Nazi regime. All I know about it is the biased information we were given at school. The allies won, so they can pretty much tell whatever story they see fit. Looking at Germany today though, it's doing pretty well for itself. It's not in nearly as much debt as the USA or the UK, they don't seem to be getting involved with our complaints with other countries. Germany are pretty much staying out of it, which I think is the right tack.
Finally, you have no right to presume as to what I would, or would not, do in the event of a war. No-one can honestly say how they would react should something like that happen on their doorstep.

"You will enjoy the delights of square basing with the rest of them."
I don't even know what you're incinuating with that comment, but I know that it probably won't be great.

I don't think the UK could afford to bring back National Service although I see your point but I wouldn't want it for my nephews. I often think kids that do crime should do time in the Army and that will make them a better person rather than sending them to prisons where they refine the crime.
