How to decide when to put kids in preschool?

I am a stay at home mother of boy/girl twins who are now almost 14 months. My husband and I talked about maybe putting them in preschool two mornings a week around 18 months. But it has become apparent that they cannot be away from me without throwing tantrums. So I feel like they are too used to having me around ALL the time. They are fine with people they know and can spend an entire weekend away with my aunt and cousin, but they know them very well. But when it comes to a stranger, if I'm not in site, they've been throwing fits! I feel like they're too attached, and even though I love that my kids "need" me, I know it's not healthy for them to HAVE to have me in their sites at all times. Do you think it's time for preschool now? We're just thinking maybe two mornings a week. Just thought I'd get others thoughts. Thanks!

what about a parnet and toddler group
it will get the little one a chance to play with other kids and for you to talk to other mums aswell
i love when i took mine to them
or talk to your health vistor about somthing like that
she might come up with somthing for you

Yea, we go to playgroups with other kids and moms. But I'm still around. So they know that mommy is still right there by them. I'm thinking they need to be away from me for a few mornings a week so they don't freak out like they are now when I'm not around.

I enrolled my youngest in preschool at the age of 3. She had seen her sister going to school and she wanted to go too. The teacher was a little anxious to let her start that early, but we finally convinced her that our daughter was ready. She learned a lot of social skills in preschool, but I don't think that she learned much of anything about school. She seems to still struggle with school.

Wow, not until age 3 though huh. So is it maybe called something else this young? Maybe it's just considered daycare? Although I'd like to put them in a center that actually works with them on educational studies. They're really smart and I'd like the school we choose to keep working with them as we do. Do you think that's possible to find this early?

They are still babies and that is normal behavior for a 14 month old. I know it must be stressful having two of them clinging to you. But they sound perfectly normal to me. At least they will go with other well known adults. That is great. My older kids went through a stage where they refused to even go near other adults. My 4 year old was horrible. She wouldn't let anyone but me and my husband touch her when she was little. She knew my friend very well but if she even looked at my daughter (when she was between the ages of 1 and 3) she would scream. We went to have her pictures taken and she was all smiley until the lady tried to position her on a chair and touched her. She started screaming and we had to take her out of the picture because she would scream whenever the lady came near her. She was 16 months old at the time.
It is just normal toddler behavior. Personally, I think 18 months is way too young to be going to school. But, then again, I could never afford a place that offered preschool for 18 month olds. My oldest went to preschool when she was 4 for just 2 days a week (1 1/2 hours each day) and loved it. She is 6 and in 1st grade now and loves school. My 5 and 4 year olds are not in any kind of school this year. They have never been to preschool because we moved and couldn't afford it here (the average price was $6000 a year per child which would equal about 1/3 of my husband's yearly salary). We are moving back to where we lived before so next school year my youngest will be back at that same preschool. She will be 4 but will turn 5 a couple months after starting. The other two I am homeschooling. If we were still living there the other two probably would have started at the age of 3 and gone for two years. Plus taken some other classes there. The older two also took a gardening class and a fun & games class (each about an hour long one day a week).

I started sending my little girl to nursery at the age of 3 going to 4. She was really excited abt it and she did not make too much fuss abt being left with "strangers" who we introduced to her as her teachers and friends. This was following the advice from my doctor that a child is ready to go to school/nursery/kindergarten when he/she is toilet-trained.
I suppose children would reach a stage where they will learn to let go. Some have it more difficult than others. I remember I had a hard time letting my mom out of my sight in kindergarten... and I can still remember the pain and detachment I felt even now. But eventually, we as children will all learn to let go and my mom as well as myself had learnt to let go. Be patient and take time to assure them you still love them. Encourage them to mix around with other children, have fun and learn...
