What am I doing wrong?

I've talked to many artists about this, but most won't give me an answer. I've been tattooing myself, for pratice. For some reason my outlines aren't very thick, sometimes you can't even see them. And when I shade, the ink doesn't hold. Is it my ink? Or am I doing something wrong? It looks like it's just scratching through my skin.
