Can you sedate your kitty?

A friend just told me that she has sedated her cat before, for a long car ride. The vet told her to use some sort of normal medicine (for humans) and gave calculated the amount to use for her kitty's size. She doesn't remember what they told her to use though. Has anyone ever heard of sedating your cat?
