I think that mental illness is very real and often goes undiagnosed. Most sufferers are not fortunate enough from a financial or educational standpoint to seek the help that they need to cope so I definitely don't think that most are milking the system. What are they milking the system of since there are not enough resources provided to those that need help. Alot of these people actually end up losing homes, families, friends and jobs because they have this mental illness and don't know or understand what is going on and are not properly treated.
I don't think that most people would CLAIM to have such a horrible illness! Its not like people are going to be running up to you to deal with the ups and downs that are associated with this illness.
I think it is people with the same mentality that you have expressed that makes life even harder for these people. It is my hope that you will find out the realities of this disease before you make such a statement.
The same way that the body suffers illness, so does the brain. Yet not as easily identified, diagnosed and properly treated.

Come stay with me one day and see that my milk has turned sour.
That is all I have to say, we were born with it and say hey let me say I'm bipolar and be treated by people just like what you just said.
Or that we are crazy or hurt people or hear voices that is just ludicrous and it makes me laugh.
Good Luck with your question I'm sure you will get ton's of responses, if you ever want to know how I'm not milking the system please email me and I'll share how I was a manager of a major finance company for many years and how I lost my job and now get to sit home and lose my house my truck and my family all because I'm milking the system.
Sorry if I sound mad but yes I am, I'm tired of having to defend my disease.
Best of luck to you and have a good day.
