Do you use bookmarks? And if, then what are you using?

Dear book loving mylotters, what are you using as bookmarks? I'm a librarian, and we are often finding in books items which actually never should be used as bookmarks, FE burnt matches, even bank notes (unfortunately only small ones -lol!) etc. But today my colleague made a real discovery... A pantyliner! An used one!

I always use book marks as I can't abide people who turn down the corners of the pages. I respect my books and I like to pass them on to other people. I even give a bookmark with them. I often buy nice bookmarks and whenever I run short of them I use a little picture or some notepaper. I definitely won't borrow books for buy secondhand books after reading your topic. Yuck!

LOL Alexandria.. you would hate me. Perhaps because I was raised to treat my books like gold, when I finally got to where they're mine I just use and abuse them. I've dropped them accidently in the tub, dropped coffee on them, all kinds of "bad" things. Most of the time I have a bookmark handy as I'm a professional book reviewer and they tend to send bookmarks with the books quite often. But I am one that loves my books dearly and keep them with me to read. I'd rather spill something on it or drip something on it then not have it with me to read.

Ewww that is disgusting! Yes I use bookmarks. I have several that are metal that was given to me as a gift. I also have a few that are cardboard. I have been known to use a receipt from a store if I didn't have anything else. I don't think I have ever used anything weird or odd.

Ewww, exactly! I have some leather ones, and everybody can get a bookmark from the library, with web address and FAQ of our web catalogue. But the receipts are very usual actually, I have ot admit, I'm using them also sometimes.

OMG! How disgusting! I have to say I would NEVER even contemplate taking a used panty liner and using it to mark my page! LOL I have used some odd stuff but (cover your eyes since you are a librarian) I more often then not, when I don't have anything around, will dog ear the book. Yes, yes, I know.. bad reader! LOL I've used pictures, bills, napkins, straws, you name it.. but never anything disgusting like a used pantiliner for sure! LOL

Dog ears aren't good, of course, but still much better than... you know what. We are hoping, we will find a 500 EEK note one day (it's our biggest one), to compensate our sufferings.

Since I can't stand bending the pages back to book mark my spot. I will use a book mark, a playing card, once I even used a piece of string. I have never used money or anything disgusting. I treat my books with a lot of respect, and I find it very hard for me to lend my books out to anyone. Fear of them not being returned or being returned with so many creases it's not even funny. I have also taught my daughter about using a book mark when she's reading that way her books will look new when her sister begins reading.

I use all kinds of things as bookmarks, however nothing as extreme as feminine products. I use business cards, receipts, post-it notes, scrap paper and so on. Sometimes I'll fold over the corner of the book if I don't half a 'usable' bookmark within reach.

when i do use a bookmark when i do read. Its either a real bookmark i bought from a store, or its usually a small piece of paper or something that size. LOL i bet that was a very interesting find in a book.

Very intersting, indeed! After we have thrown it away we started to regret it. It would be interesting to make an exhibition of all the 'bookmarks'. This exponate would have been an absolute killer.

Bookmarks? I am an avid reader, a writer of 7 books, and an author of one soon to be publsihed by Dreamcatcher publishing. I use folded paper sometimes, and I even write poems on the paper and stick them in place of a traditional bookmark. I have a few bookmarks I have bought because they look interesting or cool. Like in one case I bought one with a dragon on the front and a short piece about the gold dragon on the back. I also used to have one of a waterfall which was beautiful and inspiring. I had a Garfield bookmark, and I have bought a few for my 8 year old daughter and 13 year old son. My daughter is more the reader, my son...well a game player. Needless to say bookmarks can be useful but there are times, and I regret to say it, that I do not use one and ruin my book binds. It is neat to have left a answer on the post of a librarian. (Paantyliner just never would have come to mind) LOL.

I ahve several actual book marks, but they never seem to be where I am when I need the. So I will use a small piece of paper, but a used panty liner is just too gross.

That's totally gross. I'm trying to imagine how she thought of that idea. Maybe she was reading a book, and then she had to go pee. She goes to the bathroom, book in one hand, and pulls her pants down. She continues reading as she does her business. And then, realizing she needed both hands to pull up her pants, she peels of her pantyliner and uses it to mark her spot in the book. And, she countinued using the liner as a bookmark until she finished the whole book. If I ever do something a desperateas that (which I won't), at least I would have the mind to throw the liner and find another bookmark once I get out of the bathroom. But at least, she didn't fold the page she was in. I don't like doing that as well. Almost all of my books have their own bookmarks. I'm OC about bookmarks. Sometimes I buy them, sometimes I make them.

I don't use bookmarks that often, because I read pretty fast and they usually don't last long enough for me to put them down! But, when I do put a put down, I try to use a bookmark or at least a piece of paper. I would never put in a used pantyline. That's gross!
