What makes you HAPPY?

The issue of "happiness" is an ancient discussion-- so I'm not exactly covering NEW ground, here. Probably, happiness has been discussed (in SOME form) on myLot, before. Yet the issue of happiness is central to our lives. The US Declaration of Independence even gives us the "right" to the "Pursuit of Happiness." But what exactly IS this thing called "happiness?" It often seems to not only be a "moving target," but something that varies enormously from one person to the next. A lot of people seem to "know" happiness in a very general sort of way. They can remember "being happy," but without really knowing WHAT made them happy, in any given moment. So here's the challenge: Name some SPECIFIC things that make you feel happy, or WOULD make you feel happy. I am not looking for answers like "being rich," because they don't really tell a complete story. I am more interested in what "being rich" would MEAN for you. Helping your friends? Feeling safe? Go below the "surface idea," and think about what it is that REALLY creates happiness for you. Maybe it's something very simple, like kissing your boyfriend/girlfriend. Or maybe it's the feeling of finishing something very diffcult, after doing a good job. Or maybe it is making a difference in someone's life. What makes YOU feel happy?

I do so love your topics. :) They give me the opportunity to think and actually let the thoughts flow a bit. For me happiness is playing with my baby, listening to him giggle will make me smile no matter how sour my mood. Especially knowing I am the one who made him giggle. An unexpected kind word, gesture, or even affection from someone. Those things make me happy. A long bubble bath and a cup of cocoa with a good book, especially all at once. Those make me happy. A puppy dog kiss, a kitten rubbing noses with you. That will warm my heart, maybe not extended happiness here, but definately a pick me up. Being able to help someone who truly needed it, whether it be advice for a friend, or helping a stranger out of a jam, that makes me happy. Freedom to be who I am, and know that the important people in my life will still care, even if the real me is a bit different from the norm, and hard to take at times. When I sit down to work on my writing and the words actually flow like they used to before my world became complicated and gave me restrictions of time, and stress to hinder my creativity. That is wonderful. Knowing that I influenced someone in a postive manner. Whether I knew them or not when I did it. I could go on and on. :)

Yes, it's easy to make a long list... and in a sense that was what this discussion was about; thinking about those things that make us feel happy, and grateful to be alive. Thanks for commenting!

I don't even know what happiness is. I'm content with what I have in my life but I feel that I can achieve more. I'm happy doing the things that I'm doing. I would think being filthy rich is great because you can buy whatever you want but seriously, money can't be everything..right? If I were rich, yeah...I'd help my family members out. I'd help out all my friends too whenever possible. Share the love. Aside from all these bigger issues in life, I'm the happiest when my bf is with me. He makes me happy. Okay, I admit it..I'm hopelessly in love.

I think you're right, money alone is overrated-- as Kinky Friedman once observed: "Money can buy you a fancy dog, but only love can make him wag his tail." And being in love is certainly happy-making!

It would take a really, really long post for me to describe my full idea of what makes me happy, for I've put a lot of thought into it, but I will try to boil it down. Oh, first off, your posts make me happy, because they are so much like I think, and because they are well-thought out and intelligent and fun to read. Being thankful for everything and seeing even not so good things as opportunities or things to change. Nature, Hugs, Developing Personal abundance, Developing an Attitude of Personal Peace and Contentment, Developing and Being Who I Am, Feeling Vibrant Health and Vitality, Singing around a Campfire, Making a Positive Difference in someone's life.... Listening to the Sounds of Water, Toe-tappin' music, Collecting Items that Appeal to Me, Sunshine, Sticking my toes in the Sand, Touching the Earth with My Bare Feet, Singing in Harmony, Eating Beautiful and Colorful Food, Playing Games at Friend's Houses..... Watching Movies with an Inspirational Theme, Colored Lighting (such as Christmas Lights, Lava Lamps, Fiber Optics), Learning about New Resources and New Information, Living on Less than I Make and Having Free Time Left to Enjoy Life After Part Time Job... Making a Nice Meal for Someone That They Thoroughly Enjoy, Rainbow Tie-Die, Viewing the Stars in the Night Sky on A Very Dark Night, Rainbows, Sunrises, New Age music, Ice Cream, The Smell of the Air After A Rain...... Writing to My Heart's Content, Being Creative, Making Colorful Mandalas in Photoshop, Providing Resources I Know About to Others Who Need to Know about Them, Fruits and Vegetables, Owning my Own Mind, Collecting Beautiful Stones, Sunflowers, Roses, Nature Photography, and the list could go on and on, because I am an idealist and I think about it a lot. But the main thing is being thankful for the tiniest things, and noticing the drops on the grass, the smell of the air, the rays of sunlight cascading down hills, and noticing when someone does something for you.

Thanks for sharing so many possibilities! Often, it seems, being happy is just a matter of appreciating THIS very moment, and what's in it.

it is a hard question...there are so many things that makes me happy...for example having a peaceful and nice day with my parents and brothers makes me happy..i need to feel their love filling my soul..you see we don't live very close and therefore when I can spend time with them, this is even a more special time...and their love is the only safe and trustful thing I have in my life... another thing that makes me happy and full of joy is playing with my three nephews...they are three little twins of one year and two months and they are the best present God gave to all of us...I love love and love them and they are a ray of light in my life.. doing my work as best as I can makes me feel well and satisfied and happy within myself...I am a doctor and I cannot explain what it means staying with my patients... going to a cinema, dancing, listening to music, seeing a sunset or the light of a new day, going to a museum or an art gallery...these are all things that brings excitement and happiness in my life...and any kind and gentle word or touch I receive...any little good thing...any sign that we can live together well..this makes me happy

Happiness for me .. is when someone totally accepts me just as I am with no expectations, no critizm or judgement.... Happiness for me is when I do something and someone finds something good or helpful in it Happiness is when I have a discussion with someone and we connect and climb a mountain (so to speak) of total understanding that transends the physical plane ... Happiness is so fleeting ... its usually a moment in time that lasts for a few minutes or hours until something comes and crashes into it ... and i have to start again But Peter you have really made me think about this .. and thats why i like your discussions or comments they make me take a look .... I like discussions like this so this makes me happy too .... The bottom line is I'm happiest when I dont feel like a failure ....

A lot of what you included in the last paragraph ,makes me happy.I think it's not possible to speak about happiness on a comparative level, but there are moments when I feel I couldn't be more happy. It's bad that we can't measure it. Lot's of things make me happy. It could be as simple as a smile or as big as owning a yacht, lol(no target dates).I am happiest perhaps when something pleasant happens that I haven't been expecting like an old friend suddenly showing up at my place Or it could be rare things like someone returning a bag with a million dollars to it's owner when he could have run away Or a conscientious politician confessing his mistake in public without any pressure while in office;will that ever happen?lol. I would love to be in a position to help all my friends in whatever way they need my help and their happiness would make me happy ,but that's next to impossible because there is no end to need and yes it will always be a moving target. I am not sure how this works ,but I know someone who is happy just to be and they say that's the real happiness-Contentment.When you stop looking for things on the outside.I would like to realise that state of mind at some point in my life ,but I know it's not going to come to me by itself and I am not ready to look for it just yet.

Happiness to me is my children! I can be having the absolute worse day. All they need to do is tell me a silly joke, give me a huge hug or bicker amongst themselves and I am truly happy and have forgetten what my day has been like. I wish more people would stop and take the time to enjoy the people they are surrounded by. Some people are so quick to complain or find fault with the people around them. We are all surrounded by happiness in some shape or form. But so many people let it slip away. I like to think each day is my last and appreciate the beauty in everthing around me. Life's too short. Why not be happy?

Flower's, a big bouquet of pink roses would make my day. Sunny Sky's, nature of any kind. A smile on someone else face. That makes me happy. An amusing guy who makes me laugh. That makes me happy.

I find that I am truly happy when in the presence of friends/family who unconditionally love me. It doesn't matter much what we are doing. The flow of good energy just happens and good stuff always comes out of it. The unfortunate thing is that much of life is spent working, and almost always throughout my life I am forced to work in environments with those who I have little to nothing in common. People whom I would never hang with and who at many times annoy me to immense quantities. There are a few instances where friendship and work went hand in hand, but its been far to few to even mention. I think my 'pursuit of happiness' is to do the work I love with the people I love. I am not sure the two can meet, but I would like to try. How hard is it to remain friends and work together? That is a whole other discussion.
