How Do You Save Gas?

With the gas prices as high as they are in our community, we are always looking for ways to save gas. There are alot of little simple things that we can do to make the tank of gas last longer. My husband is a mechanic on large equipment on a stip mine. He also does mechanic work on the regular pick up trucks that the mine ownes. He is always amazed at how people waste gas. The truth is that many of us simply do not know how to save gas, we just drive. 1. Check your tires. Your owner’s manual has important information on your tires, including the correct air pressure that should be in them.Often car owners never take the time to read the owners manual. Having underinflated tires can cost you as much as 1 mile per gallon. Radial tires have 50 percent less road resistance, so they give you 3 to 19 percent better miles per gallon. 2. Do you check your spark plugs on a regular basis? Do you even know how to check them? Badly worn spark plugs can cost you as much as 2 mpg. This is probably a job for a trained technician. 3. You should always change your oil on a regular basis. Dirty oil cuts back engine efficiency, so make sure your oil is changed according tot he car manufacturer’s recommended schedule. You can change your own, and buying your own oil is much cheaper. There’s a drain plug under your engine that will come out readily with a wrench. Have a bucket or oil pan ready to catch the dirty oil, and remember to dispose of it safely 4. If your fan belt is too tight, your engine is working too hard and wasting gas. The belt should give a little to finger pressure when the engine is not running. if it doesn’t, you can easily adjust the tension with a wrench. 5. Even if you are not a mechanic, you can easily take care of a few items without going to a service station. One of them is the air filter. A clogged air filter leaves your engine gasping for breath and means you’re probably running with a “rich” mixture, that is, more gas and less air. Many department and auto stores carry air filters, and they are simple to change. A clogged air filter can cost you 1 mpg. Replace your air filter regularly 6. Only carry things that you need in your car. Heavier cars are more costly to run. A reduction of 200 pounds in automotive weight typically improves fuel economy by nearly 5 percent. 7. The air conditioner uses alot of gas. Try using the air conditioner in your car as little as possible. It uses a lot of gas. Roll down the windows and get some fresh air! 8. We always use the cruise control on the interstate but on the country road, it is not safe. Using cruise control can save gas. If you drive on the open road often, staying at a constant speed will save fuel. 9. It uses alot of gas to stop and go and slow down and speed up. So if you are taking a trip, start early in the day while traffic is light. Plan to stop for meals at times when traffic is heavy 10. The best way to save gas is to walk when it is possible. The vehicle has been a way of life for most Americans. There are many alternatives. These include mass transit, bike paths, and car pools. In our area, there is no transit so that is not an option for us. What are the ways that you save gas?

I guess I keep it a little simpler than you. Your list is impressive. To save gas, I try to drive less to begin with. I question every trip or even every start of the car. If possible, I find a shorter trip to replace a longer one. Go to a closer grocery store, etc. I carpool when it makes sense to do so. Sometimes driving to a central location and then going with 1 to 4 other people the remainder of the trip. I buy less gas. Having to go through the trouble and expense to fill up or buy more gas to go somewhere is usually enough incentive to not go on an unnecessary trip. I changed one of my vehicles to a more gasoline friendly car that gets about 30 mpg. I try not to leave my car idling for extended periods, or shut it off for just a minute or less.

http://www.mylot.com/w/discussions/834654.aspx My discussion from way yesterday. The tune up on the car is key. Air conditioning/windows down is an important element also. These are what I mostly do along with maintaining a constant speed when I can. So many others just drive crazy.

Well that is what you get for the delay.lol Also now I am upset with the unfairness again since they like your discussion better than mine. Delete me with the higher number. Evil knows no limits. Anyway, between us we had everything covered and so hopefully it helped people save money. Although others beside me lost their numbers. Thanks for responding to me.

We walk to church on sunday because it is so close. When the weather is good we can walk to the grocery store because it is only 2 blocks away.

You didn't leave too much more to add to your list. I appreciate all your hints about how to save gas. The only thing that I can add, is when you plan to go out for the day and have chores to do. Write them down, in order of what comes first and then to the last place. So you are not driving back and forth here and there, wasting more gas.

I have a Caravan and I know that one of the big ways they tell us to save gas is to avoid hard stops and starts and not go over the speed limit. I usually get about 23 miles to the gallon, I have a 20 gallon tank..so about 400 is right for me. I consciously drove the speed limit since my last fill-up and i realized the other day..I had driven a bit over 120 miles on about an 1/8th of a tank of gas...where as this would normally have been a quater tank. I now leave a few minutes early for everything, just so I can save on the gas.

I simply watch my driving and where I need to go. If I need to go grocery store shopping I stop by on the way home from work. I also plan my medical appointments around other events in that area. Tehrefore I don't have to make 10 trips to the same place.

Some of those things I already do to save gas, especially checking the tires and keeping the car in good working condition and having the oil changed every 3000 miles. Unfortunately, I am not in walking distance of any stores or food places or anything so that would be impossible. Unfortunately, I also live in an area where there are a lot of stop signs and red lights so I do a lot of stopping and going even when traffic is light. Those are good things to know to help us save gas, which is very important these days.

The best way to save gas is not to use gas at all. Walk the distance you can walk. Bicycle the distance you can ride. Use your car only when it is inevitable. How is it?

I really apreciate you posting these tips! I have a big older car and it uses up alot of gas. I would like to get a smaller car that gets better gas milage but I can't afford to right now. These tips should really help me to get better mileage, I didn't even know the one about the spark plugs. Thanks for such an informative discussion!

Being the poor college student that I am, saving on gas is very important to me. You have given some great tips. I have also found that gas prices are generally higher in the morning. If they are going to drop, it usually happens later in the day. I scheduled all of my classes this semester so that I only have to make the drive to the University twice a week. I also plan and run all my errands on one day. I have a very low tolerance for heat, so I can't do without AC in the summer, but I do run it less often, and don't feel that I have to have it on high all the time. Living in a rural area, not using my truck is not an option.

Great tips, I also combine my errands. I try not to do any unneccessary joy riding. I have a big gas hog car, so I am very aware of the gas consumption.

Hi! The best way I save gas and money is by being a work at home mom. I do have to take my daughter to school and back twice a day. I can't really ask that she ride the bus because we live outside of town and there really wouldn't be time for them to come all the way out here to pick her up and get the kids back to class on time. But I do enjoy not having to drive back and forth to work everyday! :-)

My husband and I actually use M.P.G. caps made by Fuel Freedom Internation. We had our mechanic teat them and he believes that they work also. I know a lot of people are probably skeptical but I find that they are very effective in saving on fuel.

Another way to save gas is if you have a doctor apt or need to go to the store write down everything you need to get so you dont have to go back in town to get something. Try to make all you plans for a day you have to go into town so you can save gas. In the summer i get my gas late at night when its cool or early in the mornings, this way the gas expands in my car instead of in the pumps..
