I guess you have a sponge cake or Victorian Sponge recipe, which is quite acceptable and cheap for a basic first birthday or baby shower cake.
The first birthday cake could be iced, and perhaps you could make some alphabetical building blocks with the letters of the baby's name on them, i.e. if the baby's name is Ellen, make five building blocks, two with the letter E/e on, two with the letter l, and one with the letter n, then place them on the cake to spell the child's name. You could make some extras, if you wanted to, without letters, or perhaps with a little pic on them, and place them around or on top of the name ones.
For a baby shower, bibs, rattles, nappy pins, feeding bottles, could be made out of moulding icing and placed on the cake, with perhaps a line of bibs around the side of the cake.
There are endless things you could do, but these are two examples. I hope they help you.
Brightest Blessings.

Wow, that sounds like a great idea. I think I'll try that one out next week, just for fun. See what I can do with it.

I love germane chocolate cake with the traditional coconut icing. I also love white cake with whipped cream icing and fresh strawberries. Though i like eating many types of cakes, my favorites are blueberry cake and blueberry cheese cake. I am not fussy when it comes to the flavors and type of cakes as i enjoy eating almost all of them. Among others would be plain cheese cake, carrot cake and chocolate cake.
