For me, it's really important to buy high-quality shoes that fit properly. I have flat feet, so arch support is really important. Without it, my feet and legs hurt horribly.
Good shoe support is important for anyone, though- your feet are your foundation. If the foundation of a house is damaged, the whole house could fall down. Similarly, if your feet aren't cared for properly, it can put your whole musculoskeletal framework out of alignment and cause all kinds of problems. The most common problem is back pain.
Sometimes I will buy a pair of shoes that are fashionable but not comfortable, but I won't pay much for them, as I know I will only wear them rarely.

Oh goodness, my shoes must fit! I already have enough foot pain just from standing on my feet 12 hours a day for 25+ years as a nurse! Now, as a teen,I can remember wanting a pair of shoes so badly (because they were 'cool') that I bought them despite their being a half-size too big. The store didn't have my size so I bought the bigger size. I remember thinking, I 'll put an insert in them or something. Never have I had such blisters as when I wore those shoes! I learned then that fashion wasn't nearly as important as comfort!

I never buy shoes that are too big. Nor do I buy shoes that are too small. Come to think of it I only seem to buy sneakers lately.
It stinks though as I have several pairs of classic pumps (low and high heeled) and because I gained weight don't fit me right now. I have forced myself to wear them to weddings and such but then hurt for a few days after.

I am the same as you. I choose comfort over fashion any day. Yes my shoes always fit.
