Why start Virus

Can anyone explain why someone would go to the effort of creating a virus?
I cannot see what is gained by it. And although I cannot understand it, I can understand con men / women people are gaining something.
But what do people who invent a virus gain? and if so what?

People do it because they are sad sad people who sit in their rooms and dont have a life so they want to make these viruses to make others just as miserable as they are, they can then use the virus to gain all sorts from it thats another reason as to why people create viruses
