Personally I love him. He's been my favorite character since HP:SS and I've loved him ever since. I find his character to be tragic yet at the same time compelling and intriguing. He is the anti-hereo and it remains to be seen if he will end up being a bad guy or a good guy. What do you think, will he be on the side of good or evil in the final battle?

He definetly is one of the most complex charcter in the series! I started off liking him but didn't know why, He then murdered Dumbledore in the half blood prince & I began to have second thoughts about him, I had a friend from work who knew there was more to him & had a theory about the chacter that was similar to what happend to him in the book, this theory was made before the book was even released!..without blowing the plot of the latest I think that he was given a raw deal in the end & probaly one of JK Rowlings most tragic chacters in the series as well... I'm not going to say anymore I probaly already ruined it!

Personally speaking i would like to believe that snape is good. However i have noticed that on more than one occasion JKR has described Snape as "An overgrown BAT"
For those who do not know the story of the bats: Once there was a war between the animals and the birds. But the bats did not join any side. After some time it seemed that the animals would win. So the bats joined the animals. However after some more time the war went in favour of the birds and the bats switched sides and joined the birds. After much fighting there was a truce between animals and birds but the bats were declared as outcasts. This is believed to be the reason that bats are neither like birds nor animals, the reason that they hunt a night ...
This story is quite well known and definately gives the clear impression that bats wont glory for themselves.
Snape has definately been described as a bat a number of times throughout the series. So is this a hint from JKR that Snape is working 4 himself?

I thnk that's a rather sound argument and one I have never heard before. I honestly have never heard this story of bats and now I'm going to have to research it. Either way, evil, good, or looking out for only himself I still love him :)
Considering the life he had growing up, if it turns out that he's only looking out for himself, could you really blame him?

I'm part of the group of people who would really like to think that Snape is actually good.
I felt so bad for him when Harry was learning about the teasing and such he went through during his years as a student at the hands of James Potter and his friends.
I'm hoping that it was some sort of an agreement between Snape and Dumbledore, the way the 6th book ended. However it all ends, though, I guess will be known only in July!

Same here. I really want it to have been some sort of an agreement between Severus and Dumbledore. There are plenty of hints that suggest this, the converstaion Hagrid over heard, the lengthy pause which Dumbledore and Severus stated each other (two occlumens and legilmen users). It's there, a suggestion, but who knows.
Either way I'll still love him.

Hello Joanana....did you read Deathly Hallows?....so now we KNOW right? LOL i am a Sev fan too :) from the beginning i knew there was something about Snape that JK was not letting us on! I almost guessed he must have loved Lily but i never guessed they were childhood friends, which is so sweet-bitter. Oops i hope i did not spoil it for you! i just assumed you MUST have read DH by now :)

Oh no, you didn't spoil it for me. I read that sucker as soon as it came out.
I thought it was really sweet, and I was glad to see I was correct about Sev, although I was disappointed in being correct that he would die. ;_; I really wanted to be wrong about that, but given what he had to do, I figured if he turned out to be on the good guy's side, even after the truth came out, he would still be mistrusted anyway. Poor guy was in a no-win situation there.
I was also a tab disappointed that Lily turned out to be the sole reason for his defection. It seemed too cut and dry given the complexity of his character, if you know what I mean. Not to mention, it was a scenario many a fan hashed out in fanfiction. Still though, the book was good and Severus Snape was the best in the series.
*is a proud Sev fangirl!*

Severus is a nice person. He seems cold and sensitive, but he is also a good teacher. For some reason, i dont like the way he treated harry, but for other reason, he is a good adult, because he helped harry. Hmmm...

When I first started reading the books, he really creeped me out. I mean, it was the kind of thing where I didn't like the chapters he was in just cause he pissed me off. then again, back when I started reading the books, I was like 12 so I guess that's gotta factor in somewhere. Then, when I got older, and saw the movies, and read more of the books and his character developed a little, I really started to like his character.
******spoiler
I totally called his development in the last book too.
