Yes indeed they are still popular today. Now as a child I had always wanted a bike and could not have one and this affected me. I did not think of one when I was in my 20's and 30's and 40's except to make sure that my children had one of their own they weren't new but they had the ownership. So in my 50's I finally decided to get a bike of my own.I am very proud to own a bike today and can ride.

i have a bycicle and think its a great way of staying fit but i do worry about the amount of polution on our roads so i wear a masc when i ride

This can very well be seen in the city PUNE,
located in maharashtra state on India.
More than 18% of the city population enjoys or avails this bi-cycle as a transport medium for their conveyance purpose.
The city being enough plane, as the ground with no slopes and deeps it becomes easier for the people to ride this bi-cycle as such.
Being the cheapest source every one does like it most.
But you have to ignore the hindrance to flow of traffic.
Cycling is good for health.
