I've been doing some research lately on steel-framed residential structures. Mainly garages, but when I found out how inexpensive they are, I thought it might be worthwhile to build our entire home addition using a steel frame. Has anyone used this building method, or know anything about it? One place I found some good information at was http://www.olympiabuildings.com

I have seen these type of buildings and think that they are indeed worth investigating for use in our everyday lives. As an add on I am not sure about. I know of stand alone structures. I hope it works out for you and would love a discussion about the process and possible pros and cones you find. Good luck!

Due to scarcity of good and real aged wood, the trend in constructions nowadays in many parts of the world is moving towards the use of steel frames and trusses. They are reliable and usually last longer when done properly. Good lumber are getting more and more expensive and difficult to find. Here in the Philippines, I can say that 99% of all construction works are using steel instead of wood.

That's great to know. I like the fact that using steel is environmentally sound and when I saw the benefit of a homeowner's insurance discount, that pretty much clinched it for me. Steel framed buildings are wind resistant (we get tornadoes here sometimes) not to mention termite proof and fire proof.
