July 10, 2006 2:32am CST
Does anyone know if a human pregnancy test would be accurate if used on a dog to test for pregnancy?

I don't think a human test would work on dogs, they don't carry the same hormones.

No, a human pregnancy test will not work on a dog. A human pregnancy test is based on human chorionic gonadotropin or HCG. The key word here is human. (I'm an R.N.)

i am not sure but my gyno told me the same as the above response about the hcg hormone. i think the dog would have a different hormone. if you cant get to the vet then the animal society in your area should be able to assist you.

I'm sure you are right. Its all accademic now anyway as she did not produce any pups. The reason I wanted to know is she gets totally stressed going to the vet, and that is not advisable in the early stages as it can cause malformed or absorbtion of pups.I did take her for a scan at about six weeks only to find out there were no pups this time.

I never think about it. your idea is so funny, Have you try it? haha... if you do, please tell me the result...

Yes I did try it, and the test was negative, which was right as I had her scanned at 50days and no pups. but I think this was a coincidence, and now know that I need a blood test looking for relaxin and has to be done at vets, so back to square one as she gets in such a state at the vets.

I don't think it would work, but you could buy a cheap test and try. Let me know if it works it would be interesting. Best of Luck with the pups

Hi-ya I did try it with a sainsburys own brand. it came up negative, which actually was correct but have done a bit more research and a canine test looks for relaxine which is not present in humans.

I don't think that will work. The only way to know is to take the dog to the vet. Huma products are not suppose to be used on pets.

I have no clue, but if you decide to try a human pregnancy test on your dog, I sign up to receive the results! Lol.. In theory it would not be strange if dogs have also somekind of pregnancy hormone in their blood like humans who are pregnant, hcg hormone if I am right.. just give it a try, it could have been something for me to think of..hahaha
