Name Brand Clothing for Children - What is your opinion?

Having raised four children as a single parent, I found the need to clothe them with whatever was on sale. I was fortunate enough to find some really great buys and they never wore used clothing, unless they picked it out at a tag sale and they chose to wear it. As a child I often wore other people's hand-me-downs. I never complained.
My children seem to live by a different set of ideas. They buy brand name clothing for their children to wear, thus limiting them on the number of outfits they have to wear. I take the children to the local Walmart, Kmart, and even the Goodwill Store to buy them clothing. They actually prefer to go to the Goodwill Store! The only thing I will not buy used is underwear (gross) and shoes.
When we go shopping for shoes it is not at the brand name stores, but at the local department stores. I remind them that we are not shopping for the most expensive shoes, but ones that are reasonably priced. I then send them on a mission to select a pair of shoes or sneakers that are ones they will like to wear and also the least expensive.
I believe that instilling the knowledge of how to be frugal with money is a great choice when raising children. This will enable them to handle their finances better as they enter into adulthood.

I agree that children need to learn the lesson of saving money, budgetting, not overspending, etc.
I grew up with clothes from WalMart, Penney's.. etc. I didn't always have the "in" thing in clothing.. My parents both worked their butts off when we were little. I often thought why can't I have these cool clothes? I vowed that if I had children I would always buy them what the style was... I didn't get picked on in school because of my clothes-- they were normal just not stylin- alot..
So now I have 1 child- A 10 year old daughter- I have to confess-- I buy name brand too.. Limited Too, Gap, Aero.. Sure we shop the sale racks there-- But I also find coupons-- So I get the bucks for the stores- (spend $50 get $25 off).. My daughter is stylin-- but I find ways around the high prices-- So I'm frugal and she is in style..
I teach her to be frugal that way!

Honestly I think name brand clothes are way too expensive. I take my kids to Walmart and even often times the Goodwill as well. The clothes are just as good if not better and affordable. I also love to receieve hand-me-downs. You neve know what you are g oing to get.

My grandkids have never said that they would not wear anything that I have purchased for them. They know that their Oma is frugal. They appreciate the gifts I buy for them.

I shop the Goodwill store and sales. I don't buy anything that is not on sale or clearence it saves so much money for our family. My youngest daughter I make alot of her clothes because she is so picky with how the store bought clothes fit. My oldest like the name brands but goodwill is fine for her because she can get the name brands as well there.

I have a few Goodwill stores to choose from. The one in my hometown has some good finds, but when I want to find a good bargain I head out of town to the other stores. I was amazed that there are so many name brands to choose from. Many of the outlets will donate their clothing to the Goodwill. Often times you find them with the original sale tag still on them.

I wore a lot of hand me downs when I was a kid. I buy my daughter nice clothes but don't focus on designer names at all. It seems outrageous to me to spend a huge amount on an outfit that she's going to grow out of in a few months. I have bought some name brand stuff but usually only if it's a really good sale or someting like that. And yes, she's gone rummage saling with me in the summers and has picked out many cute things for herself that were in great condition and looked like new.

I love to take my grandkids to tag sales. They are thrilled when they find a good item for so little.

I dress my kids in only name brand clothing such as Gymboree, Gap or Nike. There is a reason why I can do this though. You can resell name brand clothing on Ebay as long as it's in decent shape. Right now I'm selling the Summer clothes from last year and have made an easy $700. That $700 will go towards buying clothing for this Summer. Now when Sunner comes around I will start to sell last Winter's clothes and then use the money earned to buy this years Winter clothes. It almost feels like your clothing your kids for free with top quality clothing.

I am raising three kids. I go to the local stores as well to shop. Like Family Dollar and clothing discount stores and oulets. They have alot of cute outfits for a fraction of the price of expensive name brand items. I do go to walmart and kmart to shop as well. I figure as long as I am buying the clothes. They get them where I shop at. When they are old enough to spend their own money on their clothes. They can shop where ever they want. My teen will go buy expensive clothing and shoes with the money he makes. I tell him that is his choice. I have no objections. But don't come running to me when me runs out of money. Or can't buy enough outfits. So far it works out great. Garage sales are another place I love to buy clothes at. I have found many brand name clothing for pennies on the dollar.

i dont think it is very important for brand names in kids clothing, for me it is ok to be practical. Second they will grow up and they cant used it again if they grow up so atleast we will buy not branded clothes when they are still a baby so when they grow up we can buy then branded already.

I must say that my children go for look and who cares about the label. They dress in what looks good on them and thankfully my daughter does not bare her midriff and wear many v necks. Let those people buy that stuff and we can pick it up at the church sales and thrift and consignment shops. The big picture says that it is all good.
I too think my children are better prepared for however their finances are when adults.

My cousins go to all the second hand stores to buy their kids clothes. Their kids wear osh kosh, roots etc. When I went home this summer I went to some of the shoppes theh like to haunt and I got great deals for myself and my granddaughter. My daughter will put the clothes on her that I get for her their but she won't get shopping herself. Think of the money she could save.

It's funny... my older daughter is the easiest girl to dress... she is slim and I envy the ease with which she can fit just about anything. I love to buy her clothes (since I hate to shop for myself)... but, I rarely, if ever, buy her brand names. We've never been label shoppers in my family. I readily admit that my girls did grow up in Osh Kosh when they were infants and toddlers but that was only because I had access to an annual Osh Kosh sale where I could buy scads of overalls and tshirts at less than half of the usual price. They were worth it. All of the first daughter's clothing was used by the second and, when she outgrew them, my niece got them. Following that, they were sold at garage sales because they were still in excellent condition. That's one thing I give Osh Kosh a lot of credit for... durability. However, there's no way that our budget would support buying only brand names!
I take such pride in the fact that my girls come home and say, "Oh Mom, you know what? My friends were asking me where I got my new [shirt/jacket/jeans/etc.] at school today!" We have this one discount store in our area that has fabulous clothing bargains. They only stock a few of each thing so, if they have your size, you grab one. I got my older daughter a cropped winter white corduroy jacket there and her friends beg her to tell them where it came from... but she won't tell LOL I paid $19.99 for it. You'd never know!
I also shop the liquidation racks at Wal-Mart and other department stores on a regular basis. If I find a good deal on tshirts, I buy several for each girl, if possible. They are always clean and nicely dressed and have the same types of outfits as their friends -- but no brand name labels. For sneakers, Wal-Mart has been great... we always check clearance stuff first. My younger daughter had a pair of sneakers we bought there at full price and she loved them. At the end of the season, they had some left and were selling the exact same ones for $3 per pair... she got one with every color stripe they had! LOL
I guess I'm lucky that my girls have never yet asked for anything with a brand name. I vividly remember my aunt giving Christmas gifts to my twin cousins and they opened everything and promptly told their mom "it all has to go back to the stores" because they only wanted certain brands of clothes, perfume, handbags, etc. Their mother was devastated and the rest of us were just plain embarrassed. It was awful :(

I have 5 children, and I found that I mainly shopped in Target, Lowes, and some of our cheaper shops which are very cheap and save us a lot of money, in regards to brand clothes I do not think that they need these kind of clothes unless for a special occasion as otherwise you are just wasting you money on them as children do grow up far too quickly so it is not worth the expense. I do think that you have done the right way in teaching your grandchildren to be better savers in regarding to not waste their hard earned money.

Yes it is very hard to get kids to wear clothes that are not name brand. My daughter has 2 year old and buys alot of nike for him and when he doesn't know the difference and could save her money. They too when kids had to have name brand clothes so they got less outfits to wear. Don't see the sense in it at all. I guess it is the way the parents let them all have the spendy clothes. I really get a kick out of the jeans with the holes in them and pay big bucks for them. I could do that for them. It is hard to have children that will wear cheaper clothes but did finally get daughter to go to sales racks instead of buying the most expensive there was. So is life for sure

there is no need of branded clothes for childrens because everyday they change their sizes
they wear a dress only for one season
and its a wastage of money to wear branded clothes for childrens
if the stuff is good colurs are nice
then thats brilliant

My kids are not too particular. They love it when I bring home things from garage sales. I run into alot of the brand name things, along with alot of the styles they like. They don't seem to care. Maybe it is because they are boys, I don't know.

My boys were never fussy about the clothes they had. But now that they are adults, it is all about brand names. Even the son who has children insists on a brand name. The good thing is that he found out that he can buy the name brands for pennies at the Goodwill Store.

An excellent summary of how I handle clothing, shoes and finances.
I could well spend more on clothing and accessories, but I chose not to. As a child, my mother made most of my clothes.
As an adult, I rarely bought more than the basics of what I needed, and usually looked for bargains.
Now that I have three children (2 of them part time), 2nd hand is often an option. My 13 year old daughter loves for looking for bargains in 2nd shops, or even better, garage sales.
Admittedly, it is usually the 8 year old who gets 2nd hand clothes, there being cousins of a suitable age to pass on clothes.
Brand names? It's rare that I resort to this.
I try to buy my shoes from the discount shoe shop.
As a consequence, even though my 13 year old (nearly 14) loves clothes, she resists asking for brand names, and will always look at the discount stores first.
You did very well clothing 4 children on your own.

I, too, will only buy name brands when I find them on sale or I do shop on ebay a lot. I can get Tommy, Adidas, things like that really cheap and a lot of times new or pretty much new. I have no problem with used clothing as long as it's very nice. I refuse to go to Gap Kids and spend $30 on a brand new shirt for my kids that they will either outgrow or stain up in a couple months time. LOL I shop at Target, Walmart, Old Navy, etc.. They have some really cute clothes and cheap. We have a Goodwill here, but everything is gross. I have gone several times and everything is so nasty and stained and/or faded.

That is good what you are doing. If they learn about money at a early age they will appreciate it later in life. As they work in life they realize money is not easy to come by and will watch how they spend it. It sounds like they have a handle on it already. A lot of kids would not even think of going to Good Will to buy their cloths. Plus they want the most expensive and get upset if they don't get it. They should be raised to buy good quality but if you watch you can get that at a lower price. Thumbs up for your children teaching their kids how to be frugal with their money.

The only thing that I find frustrating is that now that they are adults, many have chosen to buy the name brands. Go figure.

I have very occasionally bought my 3 kids name brand name clothing. If its on sale and I have the extra money. I try to get them the best for my money because I do not workand we are dependant on my husband. I do not buy really expensive shoes for them. I might when they will not be growing out of them every 6 months.

when faced with the choice of buying one item of clothing for your child that will cost £30 or buying 3 pieces for £10 each from another shop which is not a brand name i would pick the 3 pieces unless of cours it is next simply because next clothing i have found is wonderful, it lasts for ages, it washes great and it wears great but any other brand i don't bother with.
You can always get some great bargains from ebay on bulk lots of cloths if you look hard enough.
