Invited to my husband’s bosses place for a family BBQ

We have been invited to my husband’s bosses place for a family BBQ. This is the first time we have been invited to his home & would like to make a good impression. I’ve asked my husband what we are supposed to bring, we have been told “just a salad”. We rarely socialise outside of family & close friends (I have no qualms in asking close family & friends straight out what they want me to bring)., so this is a new environment for me. Suggestions please on anything else I should take. E.g. snacks for Miss 10, own drinks, desert, games or something to entertain miss 10.

Take something for Miss 10, but leave it in the car as a backup. Don't flaunt it or make a big deal out of how you thought ahead and were responsible for your own child's entertainment. This will make them feel like you don't have confidence in their family. Keep it handy, and if it's needed, you'll look like wonder-mom for being so well prepared. And yes, bring your yummiest salad!

I agree with danishcanadian. Take miss 10's gameboy or a boy and bring it out if she gets too bored. As far as salad goes, I sometimes make a potato salad to take (nice and easy - PM me for a recipe if you want) or a dip or cheese and bacon cob bread. All easy to make and you look like you have put in some effort (haha)

If you have been told a salad, then make up a really nice one. If you still want to bring more, you can bring some flowers with it, or ask them if you can bring a snack or something with the salad. Be sure to help set up and clean up without asking. Have fun and enjoy yourselves.

Thankyou, I'm not a big salad person, I was going to just pick up a salad from Woolworths Saturday morning, but Missy, gave a suggestion. Will see how motivated I can get. I normally have to get kicked out of the kitchen so I'll be helping when I can. lol

This is an old discussion now I know and with luck it all went well for you on the day. I am sure that whatever you took, it would have been well received as this is generally what happens. If ever you are stuck for something when these situations arise, then get some fruit and cut it up. Things like rockmelon or cantelope if you prefer to call it that, watermelon, oranges, honeydew melon, pineapple etc. Add a few grapes and/or strawberries, and even some cheese that you have sliced up. This is what my partner and sister-in-law do when they are not too sure. Everyone is always glad to have these as they are a little bit different and they can still add to the salad plate without too many hassles. When my daughters were younger we used to take something along to keep her amused and also a few things that they might like to nibble on. Not too much though, so as not to offend the host and hostess but just a few little bits and pieces. If in doubt, also take along some drinks for your daughter which we used to do too.

If you have been told just a salad then just bring that. If there are going to be other children there then I'm sure they had snacks for kids, same applies for games.

I would take a salad as requested, but I would also take along stuff for your daughter. eg...drinks, snacks and something to entertain. I would take these things just in case. Children may already be catered for at the bbq and that's a bonus, but if there is absolutely nothing for miss 10 to do, then she is going to be bored. I like to be prepared, especially when it comes to my daughter. Better safe than sorry....and if she's got nothing to do, one of us usually ends up sorry. LOL

Thankyou, My feelings exactly, I'm one of those annoying people that like to be prepared for anything... lol. I get nervous when I don't know what is going to happen. I am normally over prepared, to the point I'll even have spare chairs in the boot of the car "Just in case" lol
