Yes I have had it happen to two of my daughters. The first time my daughter was over a friends house and she had her hair done in pig tails one each side of her head. She came home with only one pigtail. I was so mad I went over to the friends house and complained to the mother as she was supposed to be watching the children. I told her at that age they shouldn't be alone with scissors.
The next time my daughters were playing dressups but I didn't realise they had gotten a pair of their uncles school scissors from his schoolbag. My eldest daughter gave my youngest daughter a crewcut. I cried :( I had to take her to a hairdresser to see if they could fix it. My daughters beautiful blonde locks took ages to grow back.

Kids are known to do this...Hard to see their hair gone, but at least it does grow back.

lol. My two brothers and I all cut our own hair when we were little.
I cut my fringe. My parents just had to let it grow out. Didn't get in trouble at all. They thought it was funny.
Next, my brother who's 18 months younter than me did the same. Once again, they just had to wait it out.
My youngest brother was more innovative. He went vertically, so he looked like Mr T inverted, where the middle bit was the very short hair, and everything around it was long. lol. They had to basically cut his hair very short everywhere, so he looked like a bowling ball.
Basically, my parents were resigned to the fact that we liked scissors, and were just amused. We were too young for them to be cranky about it. I guess their main worry was the safety with scissors near the eyes.

I suppose it's every parents nightmare, especially when a lot of hair disappears. Thankfully the hair is one thing that does grow back.

I don't have children, but one of my good friend's daughters decided to cut her bangs one morning. Neither parent noticed...they realized what had happened when they saw all of this red hair in the trash can...then asked the child. She told them her hair was in her eyes and she wanted it trimmed. She did a great job...at 4 years old.
I remember cutting my hair when I was a child. I suppose we have to laugh and move on...and get it re-cut if the job is bad!

LOL It does seem that there are a lot of children out there cutting their hair. Hmmm. I wonder if it's really mostly all girls too?

My goodness both of my two oldest have done this. My oldest child cut hers at school. It was not much of a cut, about an inch or two. It was not very noticeable at all. My middle child hacked it all. Her hair was at the lower part of her back and she chopped it to her shoulders. I went into the computer room and found hair all over the floor. I knew immediately who it was. I have to admit she looked cute with the short hair.

LOL, Oh yes! More than once. The second time she was about 3 1/2 and had hair almost to the middle of her back. When I found her, she had already cut big chunks out from several places. It wouldn't have been so bad if she had only been cutting the long hair at the base of her neck, but when she cut a big chunk out from the front, all the way up to her hairline, My, Oh, My!I'm glad I found her when I did or she may have looked much worse. The only thing I could do was shake my head and get out my hair cutting scissors to try fixing it. Poor thing had cut it so short I had to cut off all her long locks & try not to cry myself as she kept begging me not to cut anymore off, promising not to do it ever again.
I didn't take a picture of her right after her haircut, but I did get a few good ones a few months later, once it had grown out a little. I uploaded my 2 favorite ones, then couldn't find the discussion again til now. I'm going to try posting them here so you can see them.
One was Christmas morning, with the short front hairs standing strait up, the other was taken on a very memorable trip to the country. These are about the only 2 she would let me take of her until her bangs were almost in her eyes, lol.
ps. OK, I guess you can only upload one per reply, so you'll have to look at the other one from my profile page.

My daughter cut her hair just before she was to be in a beauty pageant. She took the scissors and laid them flat on the front to her head and cut to the scalp. I was devasted and ran to the beauty shop to see if it could be fixed. Everyone in the shop started to laugh and they began to tell me stories of their children doing the same. The stylist really couldn't do alot to fix the problem but I did find it to be amusing after hearing all the stories told by other Moms.

What a shame that she did it just before the beauty pageant. Did she end up going in the pageant?

YES!!! My youngest at 4 cut her hair twice!! All the way to the scalp with tiny little kid paper scissors!! My daughter Maya is Chinese and has very very thin brittle hair. When we adopted her from China she had a crew cut and I just couldn't wait for it to grow so I could put cute little bows and clips in her hair. Finally it grew, it took 2 years for it to grow to her shoulders!! And then she got into my makeup drawer and my scissors and gave herself a makeover to say the least. Huge chunks of hair all over. So I cut it into a little pixxie do and it looked cute after. Then 2 weeks later she found a pair of paper cutting scissors in her brothers desk and went to town on the top! So now we are back to square one a crewcut!! I am absolutly devestated. I feel like a terrible mother. I was in the shower!! I usually take her in with me but a luxury I don't get often is a shower alone and now she looks like GI Jane! She cried and didn't like it the first time so why do it again? I am at a loss, and now in a few weeks she has her first ballet performance! I feel so embarrassed!

I invited my daughter's friend over to play and they were getting along so well. They got into my daughter's children paper scissors. My daughter cut her friends hair very short. I was horrified. The other mother was so angry to the point she was yelling at my 4 year old. At school on Monday she told her daughter that my daughter was a monster and that she was not allow to play with her anymore. She also told the teachers that my daughter was not allow to be in the class and try to get me to move my daughter out of the class. I said no. The mother has taken this very hard and has destroyed our friendship. My daughter and her friend still want to be friends. When I told my family about the haircut they all laughed but were very upset when I told them how the other mother was reacting. I really wish I could let this go but it really bothered me that she was so hateful to me and my daughter. How could any mother be so mean to a 4 year old?
