I have in the past. I've been writing nearly all my life. I think the more valid issue however is how one describes living.
Certainly success and wealth are relative, and very individual. What works for me might not work for you.
I didn't get into writing and seeking out publishers for the money though; it's likely my second most intense passion, and very often I write for ME. Not only that but I've probably lost or thrown away more words than I've ever had in print.
The obvious changes came with the WWW, and yet money can still be made. I wrote a book many years ago, and have stated it in other posts on this subject. The book was tongue in cheek and directed at writers. "101 Ways to prepare and enjoy PeaNut Butter." Think about it.
I'm not currently writing for income and have other means for that, but I write every day, as I have for nearly 57 years.

No, I could not. I am working so hard to make money to purchase my husband a birthday present adn I dont think I am going to make it. I have been so sick that i have not been able to write much and it is really hurting my income.

I cannot live on what I make writing, I am hoping to change that soon, building a portfolio right now. I write for pennies right now and work a regular job. I do other consultion online that actually makes me more money off the internet than any other thing I do right now, including my regular job. The only reason I am keeping that right now is for the medical insurance, I am lucky to get any working part-time.

That would be like a dream come true, but as of now, no. I still work full time and love that job as well. However, I do enjoy making a little extra from the writing. One day, maybe !!

It is my desire to live off my writing, but it is not happening yet. I plan on going back to college to study English and Marketing. I think these topics will help me as a writer and I would not mind being a professor and a writer - especially if I could manage to be a part time professor teaching creative writing. I believe strongly that those who research and learn about the publishing process can increase their odds immensly. This is what I am currently doing.
