I read some. If you read them for pleasure, they tend to be much better than the ones teachers force you to read. I liked Dracula, I like Victor Hugo, I like Dumas, but my teachers never made me read any of them.

I guess I didn't answer all your questions. I prefer modern books. I like sci-fi and fantasy most, and those are rarer in classic lit. 1984-style stuff, I like. Jules Verne, HG Wells, I like, although I haven't read much of their stuff. I definitely own more modern writers' works though. It's just better paced for my attention span.

Haha. I totally agree with the previous comment. I read both, enjoy the classics more. I adore Tolstoy, Nabokov, Hugo, Stienbeck, Faulkner, etc. The classics are much better woven, as far as characters, plot, pacing, etc. I read more modern books not as often, for just that reason. They seem hastily written, without thought to the details and nuances that the classics are perfect examples of.

Yes, I read classics, more or less incessantly. Anything from Aesop on. The distinction between modern writers and earlier writers is pretty drastic. I find modern writing pretty primitive, nowhere near as experimental, and the topics much too geared to markets. The modern use of language is pedantic, and the styles are predictable. I write myself, so I'm probably pretty picky, but honestly...between the apparently compulsory sleaze, the robot-like story formatting and the banal dialogs, where are the books? Nobody told the old writers "how to write", and they were much better writers.

I do enjoy classics I particularly like the Bronte sisters and had to study Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte for my English Literature A' level. I agree that they take you to another world that's different to your own and that's great and a sign of a good book. There are some good modern writers however and it's good to keep up with modern literature as it's always evolving and changing.

I belong to a book-club that sends me classics evey other month. I have read most of them. I enjoy reading most everything. I enjoy classics and modern novels about the same. Maybe i prefer the modern ones a little bit.
