Internet Explorer has a lot of security problems. Stll, there have been claims by some people that it is safer than Firefox. To check out whether it was really true, and to see which was the safest browser, I checked the documented security problems (vulnerabilities)of Firefox, Internet Explorer and Opera and how fast those companies solved(patched) those problems. I had these interesting findings: Internet Explorer had lesser number of documented problems than Firefox, but Opera had the least problems. However, Firefox patched all the problems very fast and gave updates, so that in most cases, the user was not at risk. Internet Explorer, on the Other hand, kept many of the problems unpatched posing a far higher security risk to the users. Opera not only suffered less problems, but also secured them fastest. Therefore, the most secure browser was Opera, followed by Firefox, and dead last with a poor security record was Internet Explorer.

What do you feel, seeing this should not more people make a shift to alternative browsers? What still is causing Internet Explorer to maintain their huge lead in the browser segment?

No actually security risks will be found more easily in Firefox than IE, because it is open source and the entire code is there for everyone to see. The IE code can only be seen by only a few select Microsoft people and hackers who have hacked the code. That is one reason why more vulnerabilities are reported in Firefox. However, since more people will also be involved in repairing the code, the bugs will be fixed faster. That is actually what is happening.
Mind you, I am saying Firefox is more secure than IE simply because they fix their defects faster so that the users are not harmed. IE inspite of being better paid and possibly having better financial resources on their hand is much more sluggish in patching their system.
