Finicky eater child

my son is a finicky eater. it's always an issue and i always end up asking him what he wants to eat rather than impose on him the rule that he eats what's on the table. am i tolerating a negative behaviour here?

Our rule here is that my 3 yr old has to take a bite of what ever we are eating. If he doesn't like it he doesn't have to finish it & I will get him something simple like a PB&J or a bowl of cereal instead. But he atleast has to take a bite. I've been told that a kid will have to try something 20 times before they really decide weither they like it. I also refuse to be a short order cook. If he doesn't like what we are eating I will not make him a seperate meal, only something really easy.
