Wind storm

United States
March 3, 2007 9:25am CST
Well here I am in the desert, sun, sun, sun, all year around. The winter is pleasant, sun, but not intense heat. Well last night, and right now, we are having a huge wind storm. The house is shaking. I thought the screens on the porch would blow out, as they have in the past. The electric went out. The nose is deafening. Anyone ever experience a wind storm, or another type of storm?

This is Kansas, as in Wizard of Oz. We are having quite a bit of wind the last few days. I drive a full size van about fifteen miles down a rural hiway to work, and I have had my concerns about not keeping the road. We lay in bed and felt the upstairs of our 100 year old house swaying lat night. When the wind is out of a different direction the porch swing slams against the house. I am sure, in the desert it can be very oppressive when you have too much wind. Hugs to you.

That sounds scary. Do you have cellers to stay safe in?

We have basements, and I will go there for tornadoes. You have to think, this house has stood for over 100 years, so it must be well built for wind. Actually, I think tall buildings (taller than my house) are supposed to sway. I am more concerned when driving. I do stay safe. I would even pull over if I had to.

It is advisable to keep in touch with local authoritirs and take all precautions and equipment for the worst case if that arises. Do not remain scared but remain prepared. Make contingency plans.

Alright, I am trying to be funny here... does a brainstorm count? :P I live in Singapore that is a relatively safe region in that it is pretty much untouched by natural disasters. The worst we encounter is a minor minor tremble when a major earthquake occurs elsewhere, or we get hazy skies due to some forest fires in nearby countries. We get heavy rain yes and some occasional flooding (despite our awesome drainage system :P) though I wouldn't say we ever came close to a storm. And so, the only storm I have encountered is a brainstorm (lol_ and when I am brainstorming, my mind does shake violently and I experience sun and desert, flood, and drought... but hey, it's all in the mind. ;-)

Nothing like you are experiencing. Yesterday we had alot of wind. But after the wind the sun came out and it warmed up and it turned out to be a beautiful day. Its starting to get a touch of spring in the air. I hope your wind storm goes away soon.

Thanks Terry. I kinda like it though. I like rain and thunderstorms too. I know, I'm weird. As long as no damage, it's cool.

I live pretty much in the Desert also, but we are not too close to the area that is having the windstorm. However, we did get a bit, here where I live. It has been cold lately though, because of the storms going in through the rest of the states, but, pretty soon, we'll be having 120 something degrees weather here...

I lived in S. CA and loved it. It's not quiet as hot as AZ though. I know what you mean about not getting out of your summer clothes though.

Yes, I really love rain, but it is wierd to see it here, in the desert. I think everyone gets surprised when it rains, because they all begin to creep along the Interstate, when it is barely starting to rain. In California, I was used to it all the time, and we would have flooding pretty much everywhere. When the temperature drops here in the desert though, it is wierd for me, because I just don't want to get out of my summer clothes.

I live in BC. Last fall, many areas nearby were decimated by Forest Fires - 2 of which in particular were burning out of control. One of them actually started down in Washington State and crossed the Canadian border. We don't get any ill effects where we live from Forest fires usually, but these were big ones and so most days we suffered from hazy conditions outdoors. We also would feel if there was a major earthquake. Not sure how bad we'd feel it but I guess that would depend on how bad the earthquake was. This winter we've had 3 major snowstorms too. Very unusual for where we live, and they say it's the worst winter we've had in the last 20 years or so. It caused a lot of problems each time.

We have had some severe wind storms here this winter that has caused power outages and tree limbs and trees to come down but nothing as severe probably as where you live or in other parts of the country. That has to be scary when your house is shaking and and the noise and not having power. We do not get wind storms very often but when we do it can be a tough situation to deal with, whether driving in car or being at home.

I hear you, those storms with all that power are surly awesome. We had high winds yesterday, it was even hard to steer the van to go to work. We had a blizzard last week. With all the warmer temperatures and rain the last couple of days it is now flood warning. We all get our share of storms and situations. Glad you are here and that we have continued to hear from you.

I've been in tornadoes and hurricanes...theey aren't fun. I can't even begin to describe the noise when a tornado gets close. It's the most horrible sound and it's so loud! And your ears will pop pop pop. I've also been in a sand storm, but probably not to the extent of what you are experiencing....we were in a car during it. I hope you have clear weather from here on out :-)

We had one here in Ireland just about four weeks ago. I was terrified that the roof would blow off the house. I saw somebodie pollytunnell blowing across my back garden and I was hoping it wouldn't land there. Just as I was commenting on how my garden arch with the climbing roses was standing to to the wind, it came crashing down on my patio set. I was thankful it didn't fall against the french doors and break them. I think that was about the worse storm I ever endured.

That is very frightful. Thank goodness you are safe. We had a micro burst, and that is like a tiny tornato. It can remove your home off it's foundation.

You must get wind when we get snow! It's the trade off. I know that wind storms in the desert are bad because of all of the dry dirt and dust that blows around. We get a lot of wind in Buffalo because we are right on the lake. Whenever there is a storm we get a lot of wind, and it's a cold wind. However, in the summer we generally have a lake breeze, which is nice on the hottest of days. Your wind storm must have been part of that storm system that caused the tornadoes in Alabama and the Midwest states. That was pretty scary to watch. I feel so bad for those people in Alabama. They showed the kids at the high school in Alabama all gathered together to grieve yesterday. It was horrible to watch.

About the worst storm for me was driving through a tornado at night in Iowa. I have never seen so much lightening and heavy rain. That was almost 30 years ago and I have never experienced anything like it since. Somehow we missed the heavy winds, but saw numerous vehicles overturned as we crept along the expressway.

That is very tragic. We get micro bursts. Same as a tornado, but much smaller. It still can do damage. I'm glad you are okay.

I experienced a very very bad Hurricane..I was about 9 years old but can remember it clear as day. It was Hurricane Fredrick in Mobile, Alabama. I'm a very hard sleeper, I made myself go to sleep because between the winds and rain I was scared silly... Once I woke up the next day, power out, trees everywhere. We were out of power for about 4 days...I will NEVER forget that storm...

LOL I had to laugh while reading this. Here in West Virginia we have storms all the time. Wind, snow, ice, rain, thunder, you name it and we have a storm with it. We just get used to it. I hope your storm dont get too bad? So you never get wind storms there? The weather is really changing everywhere. It is alarming.

Batten down the hatches margieanne by the sounds of it! The weather is certainly changing these days and not for the better. Yesterday we had an almighty thunder and lightening storm with rain pelting down and the sound of the thunder was so enormous that I was cringing each time and the lightening strikes were quite severe. We get very strong winds here also and as our home is weatherboard and built by my hubby, I am always asking him when these winds come, "did you build this house to stand this wind?" He usually responds by rolling his eyes and saying it is as safe as .........lol I hope you get through it okay and that you stay safe. :) caramello. xx

Night before last we had a wind storm and torado warnings. Many years ago we had an ice storm and power, telehones out, frozen water pipes and to make matters worse a very large tree limb broke off a tree and froze across our driveway so we couldn't get out. It was terrible and unbelievable for Georgia.

A place without water - You must be very very strong, if you can survive in the desert.
I haven't been in any desert. My knowledge from the geographic text books is this is the kind of place with extreme temperature variation. In day time the temperature can be as high as 40 degrees c. At night it may drop to below zero degree c. So I think you are a strong individual.

YES! I was in Cuba in the late 1990's when Hurricane Michelle hit and devastated the island. I was at a resort and we were locked down inside our rooms. It was simply amazing and the wind howled at over 100 miles per hour for the entire night. There was no power. So, no t.v. no lights, no radio. There was no water. So no toilet that flushed, no shower. The only water was on the floor of my room and it was about 8 inches deep. It blew in underneath the patio door. I was on the ground floor. The only dry spot was on the bed and I sat there for about 8 hours. Happy holidays! Coconuts were flying around like cannonballs. Palm trees were bent right over. What a nightmare.

I'm down in Newfoundland, and our winters are full of snow. Too much, if you ask me. Though a wind storm would be a new, scary experience for me, I think I'd take a snowstorm any day.
