I read an article a while ago about people who spend too much time reading, to the point they cut themselves off from regular social interactions. It was said that these people spend the bulk of their time fantasizing and daydreaming, rather than engaging with others, perhaps as an escape from a boring, or stressful reality.
Then we have the writers who not only read about fantasy worlds, they create them. A writer balled up in a corner, or at a desk, possibly for days, living is his/her own mind, may fall into this category. Is it possible to write yourself into a detached dream world?
The article went on to tell of possible reasons for the detachment, from a genetic predisposition, to environmental factors.
Although there are people, some I know personally, who do take reading to what might be considered an unhealthy level, how serious is this reading (or writing) addiction that hinders normal social behavior? I'm not sure if this is something we should run out and get a prescription for, but maybe putting down the book, or the addictive forum style website (you know what I'm talking about), once in a while isn't such a bad idea.
Some of us may observe there are other people in the house. "Oh...I have a family?"
