Yes! That is true. That is why I recommend Kaspersky antivirus for paid version to use because it is very effective when it comes on detecting viruses and other malwares. Well, for free version, there are also some effective antiviruses like AVG, AVAST, and AVIRA. Currently, I am using avira antivir personal classic edition. I have been using this one for over a longer period of time, and since that time, I have never encountered any problems at all with regards to the system performance of my machine. It updates regularly and can be scheduled at your most convenient or spare time. It is very light on resources and does not use a lot of memory. Hence, does not slow down your computer.
That's it.
Have a nice day and God speed!

I think the best antiviruses are AVAST & AVG, they are free and very easy to use

If you are looking for some free antivirus, then I think AVAST antivirus is the best one. I have used it for more than 6 months and no viruses so far.
If you are willing to pay, then I think you can go with the other antiviruses such as Norton, PCCillin etc.. Hope this helps.

If you don't mind paying, trend micro is not bad too. If you want it free and legal, go for avg or avast.
I prefer avg myself - http://free.grisoft.com
