What if some other asteroid hits us?

India

Our scientists have made some complex calculations and found that an asteroid is going to hit us in 2029. They are devising means to see to it that it doesnt hit us. Now my question is what if some OTHER asteroid hits us...one asteroid or something else that has never been sighted?

i think nowdays the science is so advanced its not a big problem unless the asteroid is larger than earth itself.asteroid can be easily diverted by some missiles or some kind of nuclear warheads.but scientist needs time for that.you are right if suddenly scientists come to know about that, then it will be really hard to avert this devastrating situation.

Actually an asteroid the size of a small hill is good enough to eliminate all kinds of life on earth considering the long and short term effects. And yes scientists do need time to avert one such disaster. They cannot work from the moment they realize that the asteroid is right over their head.

Then we go the same way the dinosaurs did. Extinct. Unless we can pioneer a human colony in some other planet, or if we can destroy the asteoid before it hits us and of course at a distance where the resulting fragments will not catapult towards earth. We can build underground shelter in which case we will be like the characters the a computer game called 'fallout'. We may be safe inside the shelter but we never know if the environment on the surface will still be livable. Eventually the supplies will die, some will turn cannibals and all will perish. But for now these are stuff of science fiction. 2029 seems to near a future to see any of these proposed solutions to happen, should there be another asterois to collide with earth. Superman, we need you!

That's the spirit! Let's write superman fan fiction and hope it'll get published before the day of reckoning. :)

Get in superman, send him and to the asteroid and ask him to punch it! Or get a Bruce Willis, launch him onto he asteroid, drill a big hole in it and drop every nuke bomb we have in every country on the asteroid! Hope that solves the problem!

I it depends on how big that asteroid would be, if it's small, then I don't think that it would be a means for us to panic. But if it's as big as the african continent, then I think we better start praying before it's moment of impact would come. And maybe, it would also depend on what part of our planet it would hit. So let's just hope that it does not happen!;)

WEll my friend you dont need an asteroid anywhere near as big as the continent of Africa to destroy us. An asteroid of the size even a couple of miles in length is good enough to annihilate most life on earth!!

these kind of stuff must alert us and make us understand that we only have one lif eand that we should live it up to the maximum for example people that keep diet and dont eat bread or something because they want to stay fit i always tell them you have only one life cherish it and dont regret anything you do....

I couldnt have agreed with you any more. You never know when the other asteroid would come and hit you and when we would all die. So why waste this life. Live like a king.

I haven't heard anything about this supposed asteroid that's going to hit us on 2029. Could you provide any links for more information on that? Anyway, if we get an early enough warning about an impending collision (I'm talking about 2 decades at least), it already is technically possible to divert an asteroid's trajectory subtly, but significantly enough to avoid an impact with Earth. One simple way to do that would be to "park" a massive spaceship near its route; the gravity of the ship alone would be enough to alter the object's trajectory so that it passes far from earth.

Try space.com. You should be able to get the relevant news in it. There is a 1 in 45 chance of an asteroid hitting the surface of the earth that year. In space terminology that is quite fearsome a probability.

I've just checked the site of the original news report, and it seems like the possibility of that asteroid hitting earth has been ruled out: http://www.tinyurl.com/2woztv
