What do you think of people writing letters to prison inmates that they don't know personally? Is it a good thing? Can it benefit the prisoner in rehabilitation? Should people write to murderers? Or perhaps just people with more minor offences? What about people writing to inmates on death row?

in respond to your question...
i have done many years and to anyone who is thinking about writing cons....
approach this situation with caution. although there are cons who are interested in only a penpal, there are many who are looking for someone to take advantage of. i have seen it many times and no doubt, the woman who got involved probably though " i'm not going to fall in love, i just want to help.. or ... just looking for a friend....
CON'S are just that... (with some exceptions) CON's and more woman get con'ed every year then you could imagine.
As for writing to potentialy help with rehab... to be honest... most cons need a help upon release.. without a job or decent support system they with end up back inside within a short time. So, if you are really looking to help... write someone who is on their way out soon and don't get to personal, help set up a circle of decent people around the con and get him a job. teach how to do simple things. can you imagine not knowing how to open a bank account? or feeling overwhelmed just walking into the grocery store? cons are not used to change and the little world they have been in has little choice and stunts brain growth... all my opinion but also from experiance...

Thank you for your comment :D
Some great advice there, and especially so as you speak from experience of that environment.
I agree, I think many situations come about where someone is being dishonest in either a small or large way. Some people can get emotionally hurt or worse! At the same time there must be situations where a friendship is formed and has beneficial effects on both sides. I think you've hit the nail on the head with a 'proceed with caution' type of approach :)

I have a prison ministry and there is nothing wrong with it. Just because a person has done something wrong, it does not mean that they do not deserve love and attention. God still loves them, so we do not have the right or privilege of turning our backs on them.
