Red Moon

Tonight we saw a lunar eclipse, followed by a red moon. It was amazing to see. I felt sure that a red moon must have some significance, but looking it up on the net I can't seem to find any references to meaning behind it. Only that the Blood Moon occurs in October and is also called the Hunter's Moon, which being March, this clearly isn't.
Anyone know anything about the mythology or symbolism behind this phenomenon?

I didn't get to see the lunar eclipse. It's too cloudy. I wish I hadn't missed it.
The reddish hues are caused by sunlight scattered and refracted by the atmosphere into the Earth's otherwise dark central shadow region. In otherwords, it's caused by the angle that you are viewing it from. Had it been straight up in the sky, you would see the normal black disk, but because you are seeing it, closer to the horizon, you will get red tones because the earth's atmospere distorts the light rays.

this evening there was a total eclipse of the moon. this is where the earth is directly between the sunb and the moon, the result is that there is no strong reflection of the suns rays off the moon and something to do with the weaker strength of the light refracting off the earths atmosphere makes the moon look a pink/red colour. Something along these lines anyway
The eclipse was cool though, i was watching it through my binoculars

Thanks for your response.
We tried looking at it through binoculars but they were so awkward we actually could see it more clearly without!

About 6-7 years ago I saw a Red Moon here in Australia it was said to be caused from a different type of eclipse where the sun and moon line up opposite each other in a straight line with earth in the middle. so as the sun is actually shining straight onto the moon.
Here I found this site that might help
