i dont even have any idea about this. ive tried once applying online to paypal but i have to verify my account. verifying my paypal means i have to give out my credit card number so that would mean i have to pay something. why is it? i thought it it just free. so i just decided to enroll in e-gold.

They will charge you around $5 for transfering money from paypal to your residential address through cheque. For that also you need to have reached $150 in your account balance.
Even then you should have a verified account in paypal by adding your credit card details to them.
You can send money or use it to purchase till $100 without adding your credit card.
If you want to withdraw money from paypal without adding your credit card you could choose xoom.com which is a money transfer site just like western union but a bit different. They also charge you some amount to send you money to the nearest bank which is affiliated to their site, you can choose that.
