Hi all, I just wanted to see if anyone works in Human Resources professionals around. I am an HR major and will graduate with my bachelors this year and i am also working on my masters in hr administration simultaneously. i will be graduating with my masters next year. I really like hr for various reasons and i really havent found a most favorite aspect of hr even though i have been working with it for like 4 years with course work. i feel like i have to be open to everything because it is such a flexible job. my goal is to open an hr consulting firm when i get older. share your advice too!

limosonia1, thanks for the input, i definitely love hr. i am so glad that i made that decision. it kind of actually fell into my lap. i went to an info session in my freshman year dorm back 4 years ago and my friend and i went and we thought it was cool because we can hire and fire people. we took the first class and i fell in love with the idea that in 5 years i can get my bs and my ms in hr. so i became a major in the spring semester and from then on im all about it... another really awesome aspect of hr is hr consulting. it is really on the uphill. i cant believe that outsourcing is minimizing the administrative aspects of hr but we are becoming more strategic which is opening soo many more opportunities for hr professionals. i am taking a grad class on control and budgeting and i loved it. it had to do with the financial aspect of hr and how to put a cost on hr. everyone thinks of hr as the unwanted overhead that has to be there but they dont really understand that we are the ones that make things possible on that end. now that were trying to be more strategic, we can become more versatile and have a bigger say. i like numbers so i hope to work with the financial aspect of hr in the future too!

Adding the financial aspect of it will get you really far to the point that you can make up your own hours as I do. All the investment you need is a good accounting program create some spread sheets and a flash card and you are set. Always walking in with an accounting background will open many doors for you. I love it. Maybe because I am such a control freak but hey it's worked so far for me. Good luck I am sure you wil do well. One other ave that I just started was goverment contracts or GSA you should look into it.

HR is a rewarding career because you get to see first-hand how your programs - be it good or bad - affect the people and company as a whole. I suggest before you go into consultancy, get as much exposure to companies preferably of different fields such as manufacturing, corporate or banking, etc. That way you learn the best practices of the different industries so you can contribute more to your future clients.
