like minded indivduals to do social networking

I am having such a difficult time making new friends as an adult. I don't seem to meet other like-minded individuals- those who I can relate to intellectually. I am also a parent- and other parents that my children have in their network- don't often complement my level of intellect. It is really hard to make new friends as an adult- Any thoughts on how to improve my social networking skills?
