i rate every response i come across. today i came across a response that was in english, but made NO sense to me at all. i could see that they were trying to make an attempt to answer the discussion but their grammar was so confusing that when i looked to the right side of their response to make a decision on whether or not to rate it as (+) or (-) ... i was stumped. that is the FIRST response i have EVER left unrated...
so i ask you all this simple question...
how do YOU rate responses that are confusing / have bad grammar ??
your thoughts on this issue would be much appreciated.
thank you all.. happy postings !! =)

I try to help out the mylot community and I know straight away whether someone has made a clear helpful attempt to answer the question the discussion starter has asked, OR if they are just simply a penny collector that doesn't even know what he/she is posting. So in short, if they are attempting to help: + them. If they are trolling or only posting something to get paid without trying to help out: - them.

I've only been at this a few days, but I have come across some posting like that. I was confused myself cause I believe that if you made the attempt you should get some kind of credit for it. I've been speaking and writing in english since birth and I still have a hard time making sense. And my worst thing is spelling. So I would hope people don't rate your posting just because your english is not the best. Or that you can't spell. Thanks for the question.

A few mistakes is not a big deal to me. However typing all crazy so that you can hardly read it makes me hit the negative button. Soemtimes I think they respond just to be posting and not taking the time to to "speak" clearly.
I usualy only rate negatively the responses on my own discussions though.

i know ! lazy reponses are so frustrating.. one user responded to one of my discussions with 'dddddddddddddddddddddd' and only that. it was so rude n lazy. however my question was would you rate them a (-) or a (+) ??

I always pick one best response out of all of mine. Now when I am answering a post I normally rate it a + unless it is something like cutting down people who are overweight then that makes me mad and i rate a -. I mean there is no since in doing that a persons looks or their weight doesn't make them who they are. You could have a great shape but a ugly personality. I am not as big as I once was but I don't like it when someone does that on here.

i agree. that is so rude if people here on mylot or anywhere for that matter put others down. we all have different opinions but that shouldn't come in the way of us all getting along.

It depends. I know how hard it can be when you don't control in other language, and you have a hard time to express yourself. English is not my tounge language as well, but I know English very good, so I don't have any problems with it. When I see a member with grammer problems, I try to understand him first, and if I do understand him, then I rate him with (+). But if his response has nothing to do to the discussion, then I rate him with (-).

Bad grammar does drive me crazy, but there seem to be a whole lot of people on this site who are still learning English. Therefore, I probably wouldn't have given it a negative rating. I probably would have just done as you did and left it unrated. Another thing you could do is add a comment to that response, asking if they could please clarify. It may not solve your problem as to how to rate it, but it could lead to a better discussion.

For me ,grammar is not a matter as long as i can understand , we should give people who speak english has second language, they come here for fun and at the same time they want to learn, we should give enough chance for them to learn, not to discourage them.
In this case, may be ask them again what do they actually mean to make everything clear.
Sometimes, even when you are reading some posts by native speakers, you may still cannot understand them....
As long as someone really want to post something meaningful , I am happy to read and ask them when somethign is ambiguous.
We should appreciate them to use their second language to be here....

Along my time with mylot discussions I had came across many discussions with very poor english in use in which I do understand that english was a second language for lots of users here and thus I think its ok to just leave it as a normal responses. I think its good to let everybody have a fair chances to participates withing the community regardless you have good or bad english.

u shudnt rate people that have a different opinion with (-) though because here on mylot you should respect everyone's opinions. everyone is entitled to an opinion that differs to yours.

I don't rate on grammar, as there are many on here whose first language isn't English. If I can't understand it I'll leave it though. I rate on the substance of the post.

i don't give a (-) rating simply because of bad grammar/english. i am not a native english speaker and i still make mistakes when it comes to speaking/writing the language. so i am also lenient to those who post with wrong grammar or bad english. there are some people whose english is bad but you can see from their postd that they are doing their best to impart their opinion on a discussion. so i give them a (+). i will give a (-) rating only if the post is in terrible english AND is not given any thought, time and effort at all; or if it's one of those one-liners that is way off topic.

I would not rate someone negatively just because of bad grammar. There are a lot of basics that even native English speakers overlook, such as the lack of capitalization by the very person who started this discussion. No, your English teacher is not looking over your shoulder - but this is happening across the internet and turning into a trend of ruining a beautiful language. As for those who are from non-English speaking countries or household, any internet forum is the absolute worst place to learn or practice English precisely because you will encounter so much bad writing. If you know you are a bad speller, at least type out your stuff in Word and run a spell check - it will catch most of your mistakes. Or re-read your post before responding. But no, it's not a reason to deduct from an otherwise intelligent response. It just makes a response look a lot less intelligent. I just really wish everyone would start capitalizing again - it shows you care, even if a word is misspelled here or there. Especially if you are an aspiring writer!

No I don't rate (-) if bad grammer or English.
Out of total mylot population many r not good enough in English(including me), they try to expain their views,in the best way they can. The mylot has not kept any condition about to be good in English. Its open for all.
I think we can/ should rate (-) if anything bad they have written, esp. the responces ehich have no correlation with the discussion topic.

rate on the substance of the comments posted and not on bad grammar, but when the response made no sense to you then by all means give him/her a negative rating...

nope. in english language we say/explain it clearly and concisely... if you dont understand what they are saying then bad english and grammar are not lame excuses why we cannot rate them negatively. its a challenge then that by next time he/she should think first before posting. a good day to you...

i agree as that is what i do .. but what if it doesnt make sense to me but it does to the person who wrote it.. simply because they are just learning how to speak english ? would you still give them a negative rating ?

actually i dont rate any discusion or responce, so what if the english is bad or pronunciation is not up to scratch, mine is bad at times, it really dosn't matter, as long as some one has a go thats good enough for me, and who am i to critisize some one with a - or +, different country's have different ways of pronouncing and spelling words, in australia we spell colour, in america it's color, so do get a - or + because maybe you were taught different?

i take back some thing i said last post, i have just started rating, but not on spelling or bad english, that dosn't bother me anyway, 2 of my crew on the last boat i was on were japanese, and their english was not very good, but through listening and talking slower, we got through to each other what we were trying to say, i will give a rating ( now) because of the content
