i just don't get it, why people do not take seriously the bad effects of smoking cigarettes on their health as well as to second-hand smokers? it is even written on the cigarette box which the government has made visible to its users. i think parents should be the first ones to care about this, coz they have children who may directly be affected by the dangers of smoking. what exactly is it about cigarettes that people find it hard to give it up, even if it meant the lives of their loved ones?

because it is an "addiction"...and that is the nature of addiction...just knowing it is bad for you is not enough to make people give up things that can potentially harm them or thier loved ones...people are addicted to food..material things...money...substances...activities...addiction may come in many forms...even in thinking patterns and behaviours...it is a way of filling a void with something outside of ourselves...medicating the emotive being...stimulating the pleasure centers of the brain helps us to forget or cope with problems we cannot or will not face within ourselves...laws and controls have failed to reduce the percentage of population that we call addicts...this number of people has remained the same for as long as there have been statistics kept on addictions...aproximately 1.5% of the population was addicted to opiates at the turn of the century...this number remains the same according to recent studies that promote harm reduction models to deal with substance abuse...addiction is not something we can rationalize..because there is nothing really rational about it...
