I have been shy most all my life. As I have gotton older it is not so much a problem but I do know what you are talking about.
My feeling, having never been and extovert, is that they have no idea what it's like to be shy and with that lack of understanding beleive they are helping you.
For them it is as simple as 'talk yourslef out of it'. Of course it is far from that easy. It's is a bit like telling an extrovet to be shy for a day. They may try but you can bet they will be pittiful at it.
It has been my experance however that extroverts do not hang around long with shy people. This even complicates any understanding thay may have.
