Have you moved really far away from home--from all your friends and family?

How far away have you moved from your family and friends? All of my friends stayed in the same town or moved a few hours away. I moved about 3,000 miles away from all of my friends and family and moved to a city where I didn't know anyone. I've been here a few years and have made a lot of friends, but sometimes I wonder if I made the right decision. I have a great job and love a lot of things about my life here, but I hate being so far away from the people I love the most. Have any of you moved far away? Are you glad you did? Did you end up moving back home?

I moved from NJ to Florida 14 years ago. According to mapquest it is 1108.30 miles from my address to my closest relative. Some of my family has visited me here, but it's been a long time since I have seen everyone all togwether. I really miss them. I have my inlaws here and I have made some really good friends but the last year has been tough for me with my son's accident and martial problems. I think being closer to my family would have made my life a little sless stressful. Sometimes..you just need family.

What a positive way to look at things! Rather than focusing on those you left behind, you focus on all the additional friends you've met because of the moves. Whenever I have a lonely day, I'll remember that and try to be as optimistic as you are!

I moved from Puerto Rico to Pennsylvania for a job. I left all my family and friends behind and moved to a place where I didn't know anyone. It was a really tough decision. I have a little sister that is very attached to me, so the most heartbreaking thing about leaving was saying good-bye to her. I think back sometimes and wonder what my life would be like if I had decided to stay at home. I miss my friends and family a lot and sometimes I feel somewhat guilty for leaving them behind. I've made some friends here, but it mostly people that I work with. I go home for a week about once every six months. I'm pretty sure I will go back eventually, but it will be a while. Even though I feel guilty and sad at times, I needed to do this for me.

I know exactly what you mean about feeling guilty and sad. My family is always begging me to come back. They're the people I care the most about, so sometimes I wonder why I'm not living closer to them. It's hard to figure out the right course for your life...

I moved from Germany to the U.S. and I'm not always happy that I did.It really sucks being that far away from your family...especialy during the holidays.....but it's not bad enough for me to move back home.I do get to visit....just not as often as I would like.

My husband and I moved over 800 miles away from all of our friends and family about 3 years ago. I really miss my mother alot, she was the one that I turned to for everything. If I need to talk, if I need help with my bills, if I was sick, etc.. Moving away from her has forced me to grow up and take responsibility for my own life. I have started attending college, and no longer rely on my mother to help us with our bills. I don't think about moving back anymore. I would love it if she came to visit me though and if she brought my brand new nephew with her.

My mom's my best friend too. Even though I moved 2,000 miles away, I still talk to her at least once a day. Sometimes several times! I don't know how people made it without cell phones--long distance bills would have killed me! But I agree with you, moving away definitely made me grow up and learn to rely on myself. I think that might have subconsciously been why I did it.
