Why do you worry about your friends list?

I see a lot of discussions on here about friends lists and who should you add and who should you not. When do you delete people from your friends list and when do you not. I guess my question is this: Why do you worry about your friends list so much?
So they send you referral links. Ignore it. My first friend I ever added emailed me with other offers. I did nothing and they sent me nothing else.
As far as I know, having friends on your list neither hurts nor helps you. Yeah, a friend may respond to a few or more of your posts and vice versa, but what else?
Maybe I'm just cynical. I have been burnt more from online friends than real life friends. Just curious.

I select my friends according to the quality of their discussions and responses. If one starts annoying me with too many 'lower quality' discussions, I simply delete them. No big deal.
Having friends here allows me to respond to discussions I'm interested in instead of sifting through the rubbish of "Coke or Pepsi?"-like topics. It's as simple as that.

Phile and Thomas, I get where you are coing from. Just as I don't want to respond to Coke vs. Pepsi, I am tired of seeing post about who do you add as a friend or should I delete someone from my friends list. My god, we are all adults here, but some act as though they can't make a single decision for themselves!

I totally agree with Melizzy. What is the deal over worrying so about your friends list?? Unless you plan to marry them, adopt them or move in with them, there is no reason to be soooo concerned. Why not add everyone who asks?? If they send you spam/referrals you don't want, etc., unfriend them. I think you can block them, also. All of which takes about 5 seconds.
Add them, delete them, don't add them, whatever. It's OK. Now ... go think up better discussion topics for me to read and consider responding to. ;)

I like having 'friends'. It makes responding to discussions so much easier. I always go to my friends disussions first to see if I can respond with some sort of knowledge first. If not, I leave it alone.
