Time To Think About Gardening

If you are like we are, you have been receiving alot of seed and plant catalogs in the mail. It is time to order the seeds and plants so they will arrive in time to plant the garden. We have always raised a garden. I love fresh veggies and fruit from the garden. Nothing tastes better. When our children were toddlers, we began to teach them to raise a garden. We would cut a stick for them to use to place the seeds in the row. They would put down a seed, then place the stick next to it and put another seed at the other end of the stic. They loved helping for awhile. We only let them do it for about 15 minutes so they did not get burned out. They would watch as their seeds began to grow. They would pull the weeds from around the plants that they planted. When we would get company, they would take them to the garden and show them what they had planted. LOL They are married now and they are raising a garden of their own. I have heard many people say that they do not have room to plant a garden but if one really has the desire to have a garden, they will figure out a way to raise at least some tomatoes. You can always add a few shelves in the window and put a few pots of plants there. Herbs are great to raise in the window. Cucumbers can easily be planted so they grow up the fence. They take up no room this way and you are using something that is not that pretty to look at anyway. Try growing your cucumbers in hanging baskets hanging on a fence. If it's a wooden fence, all you need to do is stretch a wire or some string along it so as the cucumber has something to grow along. I have found that you have to water daily. You can also plant the seeds in the ground at the fence and let the plant grow up the fence. Tomatoes are great to grow in a large pot on the balcony or back porch. Pepper plants are also great to raise in pots. Raising a garden is very frugal and it is so rewarding. Thre is nothing like going out and picking a fresh tomato, lettuce, carrot, onion and pepper for a fesh salad. Do you raise a garden? Do you raise your own herbs?

I don't raise or grow anything. I don't have a green thumb, and our soil is like cement in the desert. As far as in the house, the cats will get at it. So sadly, I cannot do it, but wish that I could. Fresh is so good when grown yourself.

Could you plant in pots and set them outside? They don't have to be in the house.

I went for a good many years without a garden, but for the last 3 years i've had a great garden. I grow numerous types of vegetables in there, then i have several flower gardens, and i do grow herbs in pots right outside the front door, so that i don't have to go all the way out to the garden for them when i'm ready.

I can hardly wait, thank goodness I am so busy I don't have time to fuss about it. ^__^ The catalogs will be used for the green beans, squash, radish, lettuce, cucumbers, corn, potatoes, sweet potatoes, lima beans, swiss chard, onion etc. Will volunteer at the herb farm to earn some herbs to add to what I already have in the herb section just off my vegetable garden. Then I have 2 greenhouses near me that are run by families and one is Menonite. They have the tomatoes, peppers, cabbage, flowers for in the garden, and things that I would normally raise myself. Am not back in my house yet so I must buy them. I love their quality so it is not so bad. I have a large pot I keep at the trailer that we put our favorite herbs in to nibble on regularly.

We have a huge garden! I love it! Nothing better than walking outside and picking a cucumber off the vine- peeling it adding a touch of salt and eating it! YUM! We plant peppers, corn on cob, cherry tomatoes, potatoes, carrots (still digging these from last year- under the snow), tomatoes, cucumbers, brussel sprouts (never have good luck with them), beans both green and yellow.. sometimes peas-- and occasionaly canteloupe! Homegrown canteloupe is to die for--- Such a different taste than from stores! I love the garden- Its alot of work though- I help plant and I pick! We put enough room between the rows for the rototiller to go through- cuts back on weeding-- Only have to weed the plants. We don't grow any herbs.

growing up in moms house we always had a garden, tomatoes, peppers, basil, strawberries, figs, grapes, potatoes, carrots... whatever mom could find room for- we didn't have much money so this always helped. mom still grows tomatoes, but unfortunately I can't have a garden - my back yard is very small and the dogs have a way of peeing on everything and killing it, so I just go over to mom's and grab some fresh tomatoes...lol

I am a garden fanatic. I am fortunate enough to have inherited my grandparents 11 acre estate and my parents live next door with over 200 acres. Therefore, I have plenty of space for gardening and animals. Also the house has many windows small and large. There is even a sunroom with the house. I plant and grow year round and as many plants as possible. Playing with my plants is so peaceful and relaxing, even my 2 kids ages 17 and 12 enjoy digging right along side of me. We have created so many memories that we will always treasure. I grow veggies, fruits, herbs and flowers. In my community, we all share our loot. I give of the food plants and I receive things like eggs, meats and more in return. I even use odd things and recycle things for planters like an old washing machine, old dishes and so on. My son went walking one day and brought home an old wooden gate he found in a ditch. I am using it in my garden as a trellis. I also grow the seeds necessary for bird seed and even save some seeds for the next years go 'round. I am starting to make my own garden decor too. This also has proven to be fun for me and the kids. Yes, I guess I am addicted to gardening in any form. Good luck on yours this year......

I am itching to get outside and dig. I always have a garden, some years its big and some years its small. Even as a kid I had a garden. My mom was so patient with me, she let me tear up her yard many times and plant a garden. I just love fresh veg's, nothing taste beter then a fresh picked tomato out of your yard. My mouth is watering just thinking about it.

I started my own garden just last year. When we lived in an apartment I would plant tomatoes in big flower pots and would have tons of tomatoes before too long. I did that the first few years that we lived here in our house too. Last year we built an area just outside out fenced in portion of our yard that I grew corn, pototoes, tomatoes, peas, carrots, pumpkins, and rhubarb. It is so much fun!! I will be doing it again this year. We were just talking today about what we want to plant in there.
