We went out of state 3 weeks ago and visited relatives. One of those relatives have come down with a flesh eating virus. She has had surgery and is in the hospital now. Do you know anyone that has had it and survived? Do we have anything to worry about catching it, I wouldn't think so but still scares me. It has went up her leg and into her lower back. It is so scary.

Wow, your poor relative! How scary this must be for her, and all of you. Here's a couple of links to further information on this. The first one is a link from the Canadian Broadcasting Company (CBC tv news). Please read this link first, it has an excellent description of the hows and whys of this flesh eating virus. Also, I was surprised to read that recent contact with someone who has this that was caused by a group A streptococcus puts you at risk. In Canada, Drs suggest that other family members are also treated since they are at risk of developing this condition.

This next link is to a forum for FEV (flesh eating virus). It includes a forum, and news, etc about FEV from all over the world. I thought you might go into the forum there and pose any further questions as there are people there who have gone through this (or are going through FEV.) Good luck to your relative and the family in combating this horrible condition!

Thanks so much, I will check it out. I searched but all I really found was a couple of newspaper articles. Thanks again.

I agree that this person should get the "best response". As an LPN I have taken care of people with this devastating disease. It is not common to contract it from casual contact with another person, but I agree that you might want to question your doctor as to whether or not he/she recomends a course of antibiotics as a preventive measure. My prayers are with your relative.

There is a guy who worked in our warehouse that had it and lived. He got it from a cut he received while fishing. The water got in the cut and he got an infection that happened to be flesh eating. I don't think you have a thing to worry about. I think the only way you can get it from that person is if you both had cuts that came in contact with each other. The only other way was if you came in contact with whatever she got the bacteria from.

It is just a little on the scary side, especially knowing how far it has traveled through her body. Thanks for the response.

She now was scheduled for open heart saurgery, but before they could do that she had a small stroke. Things are not looking good. I could not believe that they were considering doing open heart on her today.

Hello. I am sorry to hear about your relative, that must be very scary for both yourself and your relative. There is a member of myLot who has posted several times about her ordeal with necrotizing faciitis. I have pasted below a link to the national necrotizing faciitis foundation. There is a plethora of information there for you to read! Yes, many people survive, although usually scarred somewhat. Sadly, there have been deaths too. A lot depends upon how healthy the person is going into the infection. Please peruse the website, it should help you a great deal!

You can find out about it by googling fev. It is a virus caused by streptococcus.
It is dangerous but people can pull through . Just say your prayers for her.
Anything caused from strep is not good. The best thing for your to do is find out exactly what it is and call your doctor to find out what you should do or what you should look for.
I think calling your doctor will give you peace of mind also.

I had heard something like that in the news a long time ago and if this person came down with it, then I do feel this is something we should be concerned about. All sorts of viruses are going around these days. I do not know of anyone that had gotten this type of virus yet. Did they say what the name of this virus is?

It is very scary and can kill a person, but it doesn't have to if they get it in time. When the disease first came out, the local hospital here in Montreal had several cases. Our premier of the the province of quebec, had it and lost a leg.

A while back I saw something on a news show about the virus and it wasn't something that most survive. I'm not sure what it is or how it's even treated but it certainly is scary to even know it's out there. Keep us informed on how your cousin is doing.

All I want to say is good luck to you and your family. I know it can be a very hard time, as I experienced it about 2 months ago. I will make sure I say a prayer for you and your family tonight.

I don't think I've ever heard of a person catching it from another person, but if you're really worried maybe you could call your doctor for advice?
It might seem trivial but it'll set your mind at rest and your doctor will be happy to help.
On the other hand, I wish your relative well wishes for a speedy recovery.
