Dentists & dental work....how do you feel about it? Am I the only wimp?

United States

I haven't been to the dentist in about 6 years. I'm embarrassed to say that, but I am such a big wimp when it comes to the dentist. I am going to get my xrays and cleaning for starters. My hubby was in there last week for an emergency, he has to have a root canal, and I don't want to wait until that happens before I go, so I figured I'd start with the exam and xrays. I am 48 years old, have grandchildren for goodness sake, I used to go and it was nothing to me. But the last few years I've been "fighting the fight" with a rare cancer, and let's just say I've reached my "pain threshold", several times. Going to the dentist just terrifies me. I'd just like to know how many others share my feelings, and maybe if you have any advice for me.

You are certainly not alone. My husband's career was in dentistry in the military and I was a dental assistant, quality control was superb - civilian sector however, we do not like going to the dentist because the ones we have been familiarized with do shotty work and the sterilizing and general disinfecting practices are not up to par! a lot of germs fly around a dental operatory and they should be extra careful with cleanliness.

I am so terrified because I cannot have any novacaine or epinephrine, it could kill me. And the meds that they can give me do not last long, and the last time I went I had some major work done on 2 molars that required capping, etc. Lots of drilling, but it seems the dentist kept forgetting this stuff wore off so soon, I had to constantly be tensed up for fear of feeling the pain. I am just such a wimp when it comes to pain. Thank you for sharing this with me.

oh, I can understand your fears then! is it because of the cancer, or cancer treatment that you can not have the lidocaine or do you have a heart condition? I know for some things like a murmur they will prescribe penicillin to be taken prior to the appointment

Yes, the type of cancer I have. Epinephrine can cause my tumors to go haywire, and I can go into a crisis with my blood pressure and heart. So I can't have any novacaine or epinephrine ever. This dentist said he doesn't put people to sleep but can give the gas to relax. My hubby is having a root canal today, so we'll see how he does.

I guess I will just say that I am sorry for your pain. I will also remind you that whatever starts as a little job has the potential to turn into a big expense, if neglected.Like your hubby. The other thing is that if you have an oral infection it might make your cancer treatment less effective. I hope all is well and you get by with just cleaning and xrays.

I am blessed in the fact that my cancer is slow growing, so it means I can live with it, it is just exspensive b/c I have to aggressively treat it. But you are right, I may not be able to have all dental procedures. I've lost enough teeth before when I was so young and could not afford the dentist. I still can't, but I do have insurance, so I need to take advantage of the preventative dentistry and try to not have those big cavities. Thank you for responding.

I think maybe that's why this new dentist is taking his time too, maybe he wants to study up on my cancer. But I assured them that I will be fine so long as they do not use epinephrine or novacaine. But I will be so glad when this is all behind me, and I have learned my lesson about putting this off for so long, I hope my hubby has too.

I am also a big wimp when it comes to going to the dentist. there is a dentists office right around the corner from where we live. I keep saying I am going to make an appointment but so far haven`t. I must get better at going.

That would be great. I used to have a very dear friend who would go with me for my tests and it really helps to know you have someone there waiting with you. I wonder if they have local support groups for dental chickens?

My son used to pastor a small church, right after my divorce I moved in with him. It was a small town and I knew I could have easily gotten in to see this dentist. But I was such a chicken that I never did. I think I could live next door to a dental office and be the same way :) Once a chicken always a chicken, at least for me.

Atleast you have a reason for the way you feel. I am just scared of the dentist for no reason. I just fear the dentist although I won't let my children know that. I hope all is going well for you and you beat this thing. You are a very brave person and my prayers go out to you.

Parents are like superman in childrens eyes. My newphew just lost his mom to cancer it was a very long battle. I am not sure what hurt more his reaction or the lose of someone close to me. She was very brave through it all. I am not sure how she did it. To me she was the bravest person in the world. I do wish you and your son many more years together. You are very brave and your dad was right.

Thank you for your kind words. You know the saying what doesn't kill you will make you tough. I told my dad once that I was a strong woman, I had just forgotten that I was. I think we hide a lot of fears from our children. My son thinks I'm the most fearless person he knows, if he only knew, huh?

I hate the dentist!! It is amazing I can go years without going to the dentist and no pain. I go back and get my teeth cleaned and any other work that may be needed and my teeth hurt for months afterwards. Ugh!! And that drill !!!!! it is just eeeeeeee eeeee eee ee eeee eeee Like nails on a chalkboard. Oh and I have TMJ so by the time I leave my jaw hurts and it hurts for days afterwards. I honestly prefer the ob-gyn!!

Wow, I wonder why your teeth hurt for so long after a cleaning? That doesn't sound good. That being the case, I don't blame you for not wanting to go. It does make a ob-gyn seem like a picnic!

Well don't get me wrong I don't enjoy the OBGYN but at least I don't hurt for ages afterwards. I don't know what they do to make my teeth hurt. Thank God it isn't constant pain. It is mostly due to temperature changes like eating a hot meal and drinking a cold drink.

I'm a wimp also LOL I don't like dentists and have avoided going to them for years. I am 36 years and the last time I had seen a dentist was in High School (like 1980's). Since moving to USA, we have since acquired dental insurance and so my husband thought it would be good for us to get out teeth checked and cleaned for starters (since its 100% covered LOL), so he did his first and found that he needed to have a lot of work done on his teeth. I went two weeks ago and found that my teeth were pretty good and only had 3 small cavities, so in all, it wasnt too bad. I expected the worse considering I had not seen a dentist in over 15-20 years. The cleaning process does not hurt at all so if that is all you are going in for, then you will be fine. Think of it as if you were using a tooth pick to clean between your teeth, but instead someone else is doing it for you :) Good Luck!

I've got some pretty sensitive places in my teeth. The last cleaning, 6 years ago, was painful at times. So I am apprehensive still, I know I will have to have some fillings, but I also know that the longer I put it off the more exspensive it will be in the long run. My hubby has waited so long, that he will have to have a lot of work done. He said he's had trouble in the past with the novacaine not numbing him enough. He was hoping for a dentist that used the laser instead of a drill. This one that took him in on emergency last week b/c of the pain does not use laser. So I told him, if he doesn't like the methods of treatment, after tomorrow we will find another one. But I will still get my xrays and cleaning. I've come this far, don't back out now. Thanks for responding.

I haven't been to one in along time. My best advice to you is just relax. They have great painkillers now and things don't hurt at all. Just close your eyes and DO NOT WATCH what they are doing. If you do then you might imagine pain where there is none. Just sit back and think of being on the neach. It will be much better that way. Good luck.

I agree, I do think a lot of mine is probably all in my head. I think I am going to feel pain and therefore I can talk myself into thinking I am feeling pain. Just letting the assistant today use the polisher with the abrasive gritty paste was difficult. I would tense up on her. I think when they give me nitrous oxide I will do 100% better. Thanks for the tip :)

YOu're certainly not alone my friend :):) I'm the queen of the whimps when it comes to dentists. The funny thing is that when I was back home I had no problem of fear of the dentists, and it gets even more interesting because the way they worked was completely different then here. I remember having a root canal without ever using anything other than a spray anesthetic. Sure we had to go there a few times until it was done but it was done without injections. Even drilling was done without injected anesthetic. It didn't hurt and it didn't scare me - because all who know me , know that my problem is not pain but needles LOL . Then I came here, things are done faster, for sure. But there's a nice needle for every simple procedure, and it scares me and I end up avoiding the dentist. I think all the anesthetics really cover the fact that the dentist can be sloppy.. it doesn't matter, it's all numb and we won't notice. As opposed to back home, where the dentists didn't hide their sloppiness behind xylocaine . THey had to be precise and really know what they were doing. These ones don't scare me, it's the other ones that do :)

You are a brave one, to have gone through any dental work without the needle. I don't like the needle much either, but.... in the long run it helps. It is the pain and the drilling that scare me so bad. Bless your heart, I just couldn't imagine doing any kind of dental work without some kind of deep deadening, not just a spray anesthetic. If I had my choice, I would be completely knocked out :)

LOL see the thing is it hurts more with the needle than without, at least when I compare both. ANd the reason for this as I said, seems to be because with the needle, the dentist doesn't seem to have to worry as much how he's doing his job, has more freedom to work without worrying that the person on the chair is in pain. WIthout it the dentist really has to worry about being really careful.

I used to be becasue had several really bad dentest and experiences in the chair with them. Had wrong side froze then they drilled the tooth with cavity, realisising the mistake they froze top not the bottom and started to drill again not listening to me till i jumped outta the chair. It was not until my sons were old enought to go adn would nto unless i went first. The dentest i see now is the best ever and i am so relaxed tha have fallen asleep in the chair couple fo times now.

I do not blame you one bit after that kind of an experience!! What a nighmare!! I hope you confronted him afterwards so he wouldn't do that to anyone else. That is terrifying. I am glad you found one that you trust. I still do not know about the one I did see. They took xrays and started to clean, but he then decided I needed to be numbed up for a cleaning and is waiting to hear from my insurance company before doing that. I don't know what's up with that. If my insurance would pay for a 2nd opinion I'd go find someone else. Thanks for sharing with me.

You have my sympathy. I got my first root canal last year and they had to give me Nitrous Oxide just so I could stand the Novacane shot. The Nitrous Oxide is fun. Although, the first time I got it, I thought I was going to die. Everything was fine. Now I know why they call it laughing gas. When the procedure was all over, I felt like I was not acting normal, like people could tell something was wrong with me and that made me laugh uncomfortably. There is no way I ever want to have anything major done to my teeth again, without Nitrous Oxide.

My husband recently had a root canal also, and he said that the nitrous oxide made all the difference in the world. So I'm with you on this one, I will ask for it everytime. I don't think I've had it yet, but soon I'll find out.

Your not alone! I also hate going to see the dentist. I actually went not too long ago becuase I had a horrible toothache and I couldnt take it anymore. I was actually close to needing a root canal but I got lucky I suppose. The main reason I dont go now is because I dont have health insurance, but honestly when I was there it wasnt even nearly as bad as I had remembered it as a child. But by no means was is pleasant lol.

You are so fortunate that you did not have to have the root canal. My husband went so long before complaining even to me about his tooth pain, he had to have a root canal today. I told him if he'd of said something sooner we could maybe have saved not only the money from the root canal, he could have saved himself the torture of all the pain he has been through with it. I know dental insurance doesn't pay a lot, but it's better than nothing at all. I haven't had the dental insurance too many times in my life, I guess that's why I haven't been one to go very often. It is just so exspensive. I think if they could somehow make it more affordable for everyone, more could and would go more often. Thank you for sharing with me.

I am 63years old woman. My main regret in life is that I did not take care of my teeth from young age.In India where i live dental care is very affordable.what was lacking was awareness. I have lost almost half the number of my teeth having to get them out one tooth every two years. But 10 years ago I was treated by a very reknowned dentist surgeon who believes in saving tooth.he made 3 bridges and a denture with 3 teeth for me.I am not having any serious problem after this. I am very sorry to hear the cancer and dental problems you are having.while i wish you speedy recovery, take care to see the grand children of yours are aware of the importance of good teeth.

Yes, I will. I try to make sure my children also know to take care of their teeth. They are now married and having families of their own, so I want them to take care of theirs too and not end up like us.

You know I am really glad, well relieved to hear that so many others do feel like I do. Not glad they are afraid, but just that I am not alone in it. I can prepare and go into a major life threatening surgery easier than to a dentist, that is what is so mind boggling to me. But then for the surgeries they do knock me out completely, and I just am so nervous about anything I have to be awake for.

I share the same feeling as you. My friend told me about her dentist and how good he was so I went. I did explain to the nurse and denist that I was terrified and that why I had not been to one. After he found out he was really good with me. So just let them know that you are scared. You won't be the first person in his/her chair that was not scared. If they are good you will have a good experance.

I am happy for you that you found a dentist that you can trust and one that worked with your fears. I am not really looking forward to this, sometimes I meet someone and you sort of can tell instantly if they are a people person or not, I was not that impressed. But I know it is monday and they were busy, so I will go again and let him do the deep cleaning and the one filling and we will take it from there. Thank you for sharing with me :)

I completely freak out when it comes to the dentist thing. I went like 4 years without going. I felt like a wimp because my 8 year old doesn't flinch at the thought of the dentist. I have really sensitive teeth. Now when I go in for a cleaning I have them numb me up before they start the cleaning. It helps me relax a little and doesn't hurt me when the start working on me.

I am so sorry to hear of what you are going through. If you cannot have either of those two shots then that is an even better reason to go to the dentist frequently so you do not get decay. You are not alone. I dislike going to the dentist. However, it is better to go for preventive work so you do not have to go for major work. You are not a wimp, my friend.

I agree that it is better to go for the preventative checkups than to wait for cavities. I plan on once I get through this, plan on keeping my checkups. I wish I had of started way before now, but better now than later. Thanks for sharing with me.

You are not the only wimp. I havent been to the dentist for about 5 years now and stopped going because my dentist went private and I used that as an excuse. I put my name on the NHS waiting list. Now I have been accepted by an NHS dentist and have my appointment in two weeks time. It is only for a check up but I am terrified it will be more. As soon as I get in the door I get nervous. The smell of the hygene products and the noise of the apparatus just turns my stomach. I am sorry about your cancer and hope you are not in pain now. You are definately not alone in this one

This is the same general feeling I get from most of the responses. I think we all feel similar things about going to the dentist. The smell, the sounds, just the THOUGHT of what they may or may not do to us when we get in there. I just stay nervous and anxious from the time I make the appointment until I actually leave. At the moment my pain is not bad, I took my meds about an hour ago. The cancer pain I am used to and sort of know what to expect, but this dental business is a whole new ball game for me.

If my teeth were not so sensitive I think I too wouldn't mind the cleaning. But since I've had dental work and my teeth are very sensitive, any type of pain or just thinking I will experience pain makes me whimpy.
